My publisher-copy of the Curious Kings lettered 40th anniversary edition. The axe heads on both sides of the box are in fact big chunks of metal. The whole thing smells of leather & the gold edges make me afraid to look inside😮

My original copy from 1988 is there for contrast.

The latest entry in @marklawrenceauthor.bsky.social 's blog is very interesting, about worldbuilding and the existence of several volumes of canon behind each book.
I agree with his conclusion that readers only care about 'feeling' that the background is there, it doesn't mean that it must exist
