Gray Catbird #bird #birdphotography #graycatbird #birdsofmassachusetts
A gray catbird is perched facing away from the camera, looking left. It is cropped to view only the back, nape, and head of the bird. Its black cap stands out against its gray face with a bright brown eye.

This is not a sculpture of a grasshopper made of sand. It is a Mottled Sand Grasshopper at Goosewing Beach Preserve in Little Compton, RI

#sandgrasshopper
The grasshopper is camouflaged to look like sand. It is the color of sand with small specs resembling more sand. Its sandy exterior, no doubt, holds a heart of sand.

Great Black Digger Wasp seems to lead with its belly. Look at those eyes and look at all that pollen. #greatblackdiggerwasp #wasp

Thanks Rob. I'm 70 years old and poop still amuses me.

On an island all their own in the formerly pristine waters of the Sakonnet River. #doublecrestedcormorant #bird #birdphotography #birdpooping #birdsoftivertonri #birdsofrhodeisland
Two cormorants stand on a small rock in the Sakonnet River. The bird on the right is nonchalant, looking left over the other. The bird on the left has its tail raised and has shot a dart of poop into the water behind it.

Fantastic! Mine are typically tiny specs. 😟

Pest Control in Little Compton, RI. #northernharrier #bird #birdphotography
A Northern Harrier passes in front of a home, searching for pests. In real life the harrier was much closer than the homes but a long lens does wonders to tighten the scene.

Where's Waldo? A cleverly camouflaged Savannah Sparrow takes advantage of its hiding place by sticking out its tongue at the photographer.

Most recently, I've been trying to capture larger images that contain wildlife as a piece of the story. I'm in a panel discussion today, Sat Sep 27 at Westport Art Group. 5PM at the gallery at 1740 Main Road, Westport Point. #westportartgroup

In a panel on Sep 27 at 5pm at Westport Art Group, I'll discuss my "journey" as a bird photographer. I moved on from portraits to try to capture behavior, such as:
1. Beach yoga w/ #AmericanOystercatcher
2. Courtship w/ #LeastTern
3. Nesting w/ #SnowybrowedNuthatch

I am in a panel on Sep 27 at 5pm at Westport Art Group in Westport MA where I'll discuss my "journey" as a bird photographer. I began by capturing portraits. These are:

1. #YellowWarbler
2. #WhiteeyedVireo
3. #EasternBluebird
4. Immature #BaldEagle
Bright male Yellow Warbler perches on a small branch. His chest is streaked with brown stripes. A White-eyed Vireo perches on a small branch, turning toward the camera. An Eastern Bluebird perches on a small branch in bright sunlight. Looking up toward an immature Bald Eagle, looking left to show a profile. The feathers are brown with mottled white throughout. The crown has more white as it moves along its years-long progression toward classic adult plumage.

In 2016 I shot my 1st photo as a birder. I had seen a friend post photos of birds and I thought "I can do that". Turns out I couldn't, so I shot this RI Red instead. I'll feature this photo in a talk at Westport Art Group on 09/27 at 5pm in a panel with other photographers. 1740 Main Rd, Westport.

To prepare for a panel discussion at the Westport Art Group's 2025 Photo Exhibition, I've been revisiting hidden gems in my photo library, such as this Great Horned Owl from Jan 30, 2023 in Savannah. The panel convenes on Saturday, September 27 at 5pm at 1740 Main Road, Westport, MA. See you there?

A red-shouldered hawk perches on a bare branch at the tippy top of a tree. This is a crop of the photo which shows more tree.

"Spit Happens" - 1 of 3 of my photos on view at the Westport Art Group Photography Exhibition, which runs over the final three weekends in September from Thursday thru Sunday. There are lots of invited photographers showing lots of great photos. Hope you can visit (and buy prints!) #westportartgroup
Detail of a print on view at the 2025 Photo Exhibition at the Westport Art Group. A laughing gull stands above its resting buddy, spitting into the wind like Clark Gable in "It Happened One Night".
