Two days development of active sunspot region 4246: Increasing size, number of spots and complexity combined with an unusual north-south orientation
markorummelsburg.bsky.social
STEREO A shows an earth-directed CME, a faint partial Halo visible in SOHO/LASCO C2, possible directions for the plasma from the dimming region south of 4246 and a 400 km/s CME listed in DONKI

The sun was busy today, but as far as i can tell, no earth-directed solar storms were launched…

Growth of active sunspot region 4246 – potential CMEs likely to be deflected northwards

East limb of the sun – foreground: old region 4220 (new 4249) - behind: old regions 4214/4217 – Can they still make a difference?

The sun today: Mostly quiet

(SDO AIA 171 Å + SDO HMI Magnetogram)

The solar synoptic map shows a quiet sun with only a few small sunspot groups and a large coronal hole that crossed the central meridian. Its fast solar wind may arrive in 2-4 days and lead to increased geomagnetic activity.

Synoptic map of the sun: many filaments, mainly simple sunspot groups (active regions) and a large coronal hole near the central meridian

Bipolar ‘anemone active region’ AR4243 within a large coronal hole (CH85-), surrounded by a ring-shaped filament. On the left side (in the east), you can see how the fast solar wind escapes and wobbles along the magnetic field lines.

Active Region 4242 (what a name!) in the southeast has the potential to become a significant solar flare player

2025-10-03 0500z - M1.5 flare, 2 eruptions, 2 CMEs, one heading NE, one heading toward earth, likely arrival around Oct 6

Four very active regions in the northeast of the sun.

Did you know that our sun can do that? Sympathetic flaring between -90° and +90° (SDO AIA 94, 131, 171 Å)

The sun. The moon. The CMEs.

Sun today: New regions rotate into view 😊

AR4220 in the SW↘︎: no further growth 😣

Active Region 4216 contains a dense filament in its center that needed some reconfiguration. A C5.6 and an M1.5 flare occurred. It appears that no material escaped the corona.

Sun's potential magnetic field, polarities of active regions, filaments and most prominent the large coronal hole CH80+ that will soon cross the central meridian and might bring us fast solar wind from 21 Sep on suntoday.lmsal.com/suntoday/?su...
