Today we at UNC had the great privilege to learn from @economoser.bsky.social about super cool work on the macroeconomics of wage rigidity and job separations for our first joint applied+macro seminar of the semester. Below is Chris with our PhD students.

Ending this semester’s macro seminar series at UNC with an absolute highlight: Jonathan Payne @princetonecon.bsky.social
taught us his brilliant joint work with @yuchengyang1993.bsky.social and Adam Rebei on *Deep Learning for Search and Matching Models*

Well deserved promotion!Congrats, Dina 🤗 Since @dinapomeranz.bsky.social promotes causes rather than herself, I thought I’d jump in to spread the good news 🎉🎈

For the Spring semester, I am restarting my free weekly open office-hours for anyone in the world with Econometrics questions. Wednesdays 10-12AM Eastern or by appointment; sign up and drop by!

Details and sign up at donskerclass.github.io/OfficeHours....
Free Weekly Econometrics Office Hours

Email: rachelleahchilders@gmail.com or Sign up form: https://forms.gle/XS55FASiGGHqAZKa6

Time: Wednesdays 10:00-12:00AM Eastern US (or by appointment)

Location: Zoom Link https://bowdoin.zoom.us/j/96039587180

Who: Anyone. Grad students, researchers, government workers. Private sector is okay but in that case if your question requires work that exceeds the allotted time I may request to negotiate a consulting fee.

What I can probably help with: Theory questions. Research design. Modeling.

Particular expertise: Time series. Causal inference. Bayes. Structural approaches. Machine learning.

Theory: Asymptotics. Statistical learning. Bayes/MCMC. Identification. Decision theory. Semiparametrics.

Fields: I know most about macro (DSGE, heterogeneous agents, VARs, etc), but can follow along in applied micro (labor, development, health, etc) & some finance.

Code: I think in R, can write Julia, and can get by in Python. I am likely to suggest you build a model in Stan. I know Stata but if it’s relevant to your question I suspect you can get better help elsewhere.

I just didn’t buy them. They, in my opinion, not necessary. Go with pickled cucumbers and baby corn, I promise nothing will be missed.

Thanks to @donskerclass.bsky.social I found that recordings of our ACM EC-24 talks are online. In case you are interested, my overview-ish talk on deep learning based solution methods (focus on aggregate risk and OLG) is available here:

How big is the cold-start problem on Airbnb? Pretty big!

Lowering the price of new listings relative to incumbent ones would lead to a welfare increase of more than 8% of total host revenue, mostly benefitting consumers.

Just back from giving a talk to 2nd year students on how to approach research, how to write a paper. Abhijit was coming after me (good thing he didn't go first, tough act to follow!)

Here are my slides...
