I am a constituent of New York’s 4th Congressional District, the area you claim to represent. I went to school with your daughter. I was the president of the College Democrats at my university, and I have voted for your party in every election since I became eligible, including you, multiple times. When I cast those votes, I knew we did not agree on everything, but I also knew that I needed a representative who cared, who did the right thing when it really counted. I’m disappointed to learn that you could not even meet that low bar this week with your recent vote to fund DHS. You said in your statement that the bill contained “commonsense guardrails.” This was why you voted for it, you said, and why you were shocked more of your Democratic colleagues did not join you. I am writing to you shortly after a second civilian was murdered by an ICE agent in Minneapolis. I am curious to know how the guardrails you described are protecting me or my neighbors. I am wondering how I am supposed to believe that handing them ten billion dollars and a stern warning to knock it off is meant to be an effective means of curbing ICE’s brutality violence. Of putting a stop to their killing spree. You can understand, I hope, how your calculations here are confusing to me. You say you support immigration enforcement, and I presume you mean “if done correctly.” What is correct for you? Was it correct before the murders started, when New York students were being taken away from their families, having committed no crime, having known no other home but this one? Is it between the two executions in Minnesota, when we saw a five-year-old boy separated from his father and shipped off to a state where he never lived, where he never had any family, leaving his stuffed animals behind in the classroom that so desperately wanted him back? By voting with them, I can only conclude that this all seems “correct” to you, too. this photo: I saw that you recently were at an event honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. I have been thinking about him, too, this week, with the holiday celebrating his work just barely in our rearview mirror. I’ve been thinking about a Letter from a Birmingham Jail—something I know your daughter read in English class, because I read it there for the first time, too. “I must confess,” he said, “that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate… who is more devoted to ‘order’ than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice.” It was upsetting to learn, Congresswoman, that when it came to protecting our immigrant neighbors here on Long Island and standing up against the agency that killed an American citizen in broad daylight, you were not interested in justice. King continued, “Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.” I would like to say that frustrating and bewildering are gentler words than what I might use myself in the present moment. Afraid to veer too far left or too far right, you have chosen to walk the middle road that King described. It is a road now and forever littered with the bodies of innocents. I implore you, as a constituent, as a neighbor, as a U.S. citizen, or as a human being with morals—do not just ignore, or worse, step over, the corpses now left behind. Choose a different road. And in the meantime, I will look forward to voting for your primary opponent. Because to hold the title of “Representative,” you must, in fact, represent me.
