On 6 June 1944, during WW2, the bridge was, along with the nearby Ranville Bridge over the Orne River, the objective of members of D Company, 2nd Battalion, Ox ‘Bucks Light Infantry of the 6th Airborne Division in the opening minutes of D-Day.

Ranville War Cemetery is a WW2 cemetery of Commonwealth soldiers in France, located in Ranville. A large proportion of those interred were members of the British 6th Airborne Division.
