The story ends with a surprising coda: Tony returns home to find Kathy Dare waiting for him in the dark, which is never a good sign. “I just wanted to see you one last time. And to tell you--good-bye.” And with that, she shoots Tony Stark! #marvel #ironman #blam

The fight between Iron Man and the Mandarin has all the back-and-forth story beats that you would expect, plus the hostages escaping in the background during the fight. But Tony wins, the Mandarin is defeated, and I guess things are resolved. For now. #marvel #ironman

I think that being buried in molten glass would be more stressful than Tony Stark seems to let on. Maybe that’s why he’s Iron Man. #marvel #ironman

While the Mandarin story is going on, we have a whole subplot about jilted lover Kathy Dare stalking Tony Stark, threatening him one moment and then apologizing the next. She’s kind of a background annoyance throughout all of the stories. For now. #marvel #ironman

Tony Stark meets with the Mandarin—sorry, I mean Zhang Tong—and agrees to a one-on-one battle for the lives of his employees. He’s also confused about why the Mandarin doesn’t recognize him, but I feel like that’s a deeper mystery for another time. #marvel #ironman

[Iron Man #242, May 1989] I’m not sure what’s “all-new” about the Mandarin here. Is it because he suddenly looks like Tony Stark? I honestly don’t pay that much attention to the Mandarin. [#cmro M7649]

The Mandarin wants a duel against Iron Man, and he’s using Tony Stark’s associate as a way to force compliance. It’s strange that the Mandarin doesn’t try to kidnap Tony Stark himself, and somehow he still hasn’t figured out that Tony Stark is Iron Man.… #marvel #ironman

The Mandarin has loaned his rings to members of the Hand, and they use their various powers to kidnap Tony Stark’s friends and associates! I guess it makes sense to give rings to the Hand! #marvel #ironman

Stark Enterprises is trying to open a branch in Hong Kong, but they are being blocked at every turn by a shadowy businessman named Zhang Tong. But when Tony Stark arrives to investigate, he discovers that Zhang Tong is actually the Mandarin! #marvel #ironman

[Iron Man #241, Apr. 1989] We haven’t seen the Mandarin for a while. Is he going to suffer from the same Yellow Peril tropes that were used in the ’70s? [#cmro M7648]

This is just a little slice-of-life story, kind of like the old Incredible Hulk TV show: Daredevil arrives in town, helps some people with their problems, then leaves just as quietly. It’s a nice standalone story. #marvel #daredevil
December 6, 2025 at 5:23 PM
The story isn’t complicated: Hank is an enforcer, collecting loan payments by force for someone in the city. He’s recruited his brother Raymo to help break some ankles, and Daredevil is encouraging him to leave town instead. #marvel #daredevil

Matt Murdock wanders into town and stays at a bed and breakfast, just an anonymous blind man momentarily intersecting with other people’s complicated lives. You would hardly even notice him. #marvel #daredevil

[Daredevil #268, Jul. 1989] This is going to be quite a shock going from the Silver Age fancy of Thor to the gritty New York realism of Daredevil. [#cmro M7647]

This week’s logo covers the Thor storyline which concluded in issues #406–408, as Thor enters the Black Galaxy to save Hercules (and the High Evolutionary), almost loses his battle against Mongoose, and pleads for Eric Masterson’s life! #marvel #cmro #mda

Eric Masterson returns home to his son, accompanied by Hercules but without Thor. However he is conspicuously carrying a walking stick, because his mind and body have been merged with Thor! So I guess we’re going to start rehashing all those old Silver Age stories?? #marvel #thor

In case you forgot, Asgard is still lost in the Negative Zone, and drifting farther away from the mortal plane with every passing moment. For the moment, it seems like Thor will never again find his way back to Asgard…but only for the moment. #marvel #thor

Eric Masterson is on the verge of death, and Thor uses Mjolnir’s power to bridge the gap to Asgard one last time—not to return home, but to plead with Odin to save Masterson’s life! Odin bids farewell to his son, and uses his power to perform one last enchantment.… #marvel #thor

Mongoose is blasting Thor with Wundagorian technology, and it looks like even Thor might die! But Eric Masterson can’t stand by and do nothing, so he lifts Mjolnir and uses it to defend Thor…but takes the full force of Mongoose’s attack! #marvel #thor
December 4, 2025 at 9:31 PM
It’s so bizarre that Mongoose was trying to kill Thor way back in issue #402, and now it’s issue #408 and he’s finally getting around to it. I can’t tell if it was poor story planning, or if they just forgot about the character altogether. #marvel #thor

Before he was defeated, the High Evolutionary was about to hyper-evolve the entire world with a genetic bomb. Now he’s back, and he has a two-second conversation with Thor where he promises not to threaten the world again. I guess superheroes take a lot on faith! #marvel #thor
December 4, 2025 at 9:09 PM
Hercules is back! He sacrificed himself to stop the High Evolutionary during the climax of the Evolutionary War (back in Avengers Annual #17 [M7327]), but now he’s back on Earth! And I guess the High Evolutionary is no longer a threat?! Seems suspect. #marvel #thor

[Thor #408, Oct. 1989] After venturing to Asgard and Wundagore and the Negative Zone and the Black Galaxy, it’s going to be anticlimactic to return to Earth and battle the Mongoose from six issues ago! [#cmro M7641]
December 4, 2025 at 7:57 PM
I’m not even going to bother going through the rest of this story: Thor’s stops the Null Bomb, they save Hercules and the High Evolutionary, and the avoid the giant Celestial. How? “We may never learn the answers to such puzzling questions!” You said it, Thor! #marvel #thor
December 4, 2025 at 7:53 PM
Thor eventually finds the Null Bomb on top of a plateau, which is also being watched over by a giant Celestial. But why is it perfectly centered on a platform, and why are there Celestial heads nearby?? This story makes no sense. #marvel #thor
