We discovered a photo of artist Hilda Goldwag in our collection and indentified the painting she’s working on!

A refugee from Vienna in the 1930s, she became an important figure in Scottish art. Her story reminds us of the creativity and resilience migrants bring to our culture.

Photograph of a lady painting along the canal. She is giving the back to the photographer and she is wearing a bucket hat and a brown waterproof coat. Next to her on the right there's an open shopping trolley and in front of her a tripod with a large canvas on top where she is painting on. Abstract painting of the canal. The canal water is in the middle of the painting and a red row of presumably houses reflects on the water. In the foreground there's some green vegetation.

The Halls are proof that heritage isn’t always something you can pick up or move, sometimes it’s the very space where history happens.

What part of Maryhill’s heritage are you most proud of?

It’s #ScottishMuseumsDay and we’re shining a light on our mightiest ‘object’: Maryhill Burgh Halls!

Opened in 1878 as the civic home of the old Burgh, they are more than just a building. They’ve seen generations of Maryhill life, from council decisions to community dances.

Do you remember this?

A striking moment in Maryhill’s history: the Roxy Cinema being demolished as the new Wyndford high flats rose behind it. Scenes like this remind us how quickly familiar places can be reshaped by redevelopment.

See more at our exhibition:

Can you tell where this photo was taken? 🚂

Maryhill has changed a lot since the 1960s and this spot looks very different today!

See it at our exhibition 'A Visual Stroll Through Maryhill', with more photos and objects from our collection.

What will Glasgow look like in the future? That’s the big question behind this year’s Doors Open Days Festival.

To explore it, we’ve gone back in time to see how some people once imagined Maryhill’s future. Some ideas vanished, others reshaped the city we know today.

An old key is getting a careful clean 🧽✨

It's nearly ready to take its place in our displays at Maryhill Burgh Halls. Any ideas what it opened?

Stay tuned to find out!

Ever noticed the carved faces watching over Maryhill Road from the Burgh Halls?

Sculpted by Charles B. Grassby, we don’t actually know who they’re meant to be.

Any guesses: local figures, mythical characters, or just the sculptor’s imagination?

#DoorsOpenDays is nearly here, and it’s got us thinking back to 2004, one of our first ever.

The Trust hadn’t even formed yet but our Hunter set up a display sharing the vision for what the Halls could become.

Do you remember when the Main Hall looked like this?

We’ll be back again this year😍

🌟Trustees!🌟

Our board is predominantly male, and we’re keen to broaden the range of voices around the table. We especially encourage women, non-binary people, and others with backgrounds or experiences which are underrepresented in community leadership.

The Burgh Halls have been here a long time, and we know many of you have too.

Got a memory that’s stuck with you? A shop, a street, a tiny moment?

We’d love to hear it: one word or a wee story.

Might share a few over the next few days.

A tram on Maryhill Road, once a familiar sight across Glasgow. This postcard captures an ordinary moment that now feels distant.

Recognise where it was taken?

🚊 Drop your guesses and share any tram memories.

Was Maryhill really named after a real person?

Yes! Mary Hill lived here in the 1700s on the Gairbraid Estate and helped shape what would become this community.

Her life holds some mystery, but her legacy is written into the name and fabric of the place.

The Jessie Stephen exhibition is now closed.

Huge thanks to @glasgowgallivanter.bsky.social, who researched and wrote the exhibition with such care, her love for Jessie shone through. 💜

It’s been a brilliant few weeks. Thanks to everyone who came, shared, and connected with Jessie’s story.
Image with some of the feedback we got in the exhibition. The background photo is a close-up of Anne Vance's portrait of Jessie that was on display. In the foreground, 3 comments, all of one colour (green, white and purple).

1.Very interesting and informative. It is important that the role of working-class women in the suffrage movement is recognised and valued.

2.Wonderful exhibition! I feel delighted to have learned so much about Jessie, a truly incredible woman. We should all know about her!

3. This was a fantastic tribute to a powerful woman and inspiring activist. It is great to have preserved and exhibited her great life.

We’re getting ready to wrap up the Jessie Stephen exhibition. It closes this Friday 13th June. 💜

We got the loveliest surprise last week! This drawing of Jessie Stephen by local artist (and friend!) Jo Sunshine 🌈

We’ll be keeping it in the archive as part of Jessie’s growing story here.

Not long left now to catch the exhibition!
