Note the trails are very well marked, maps are available at headquarters, where you'll find public bathrooms open near barbecue grills waiting for you in the shade.

For those seeking a quieter experience, check out the giant pine trees planted by the "Pinecone Johnnies," the former WWI veterans employed by Civilian Conservation Corps Company 397. Or find the stone structures in the forest believed to be used by pre-colonial residents.

If you're just starting mountain biking, F. Gilbert Hills State Forest is a perfect place to start. The main trails are wide and allow for some speed going downhill, but the paths are groomed enough to avoid hikers, dogs and wipeouts.

If you stop, just wear a hat, as there is little shade until you duck under the Red Line Train bridge.

There is limited free parking at Taylor and Water streets in Dorchester, but you can walk in from the North Quincy train station. Right now you can catch the bull thistles in bloom captivating the bees and bright yellow finches as you zoom past.

Senator Joseph Finnegan Park is 14 acres of parkland at the mouth of the Neponset River. A former paper factory, it's now a restored ecological habitat you can bike through. #StateParkSunday

You'll see lots of histories about its past, with amusement parks and dance halls, but it remains a spot on the ocean that is free to all. Bath houses are open weekends 7 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

America's first public beach, Revere Beach, sits waiting for you this summer-ending weekend. Its crescent shape runs for miles, framed by Nahant and Winthrop's peninsulas and accessible by a parkway designed by Charles Eliot. #StateParkSunday

But in August, you can take the short hike to Trap Falls and stand in the spray and take a natural shower: The campsites have bathrooms but no showers.
