Sunny but cold afternoon at Hornchurch Stadium as unbeaten Urchins go back to the top of National League South after a 2-1 win over midtable Hampton & Richmond Borough, with a raucous 758 crowd. The first Hornchurch goal was scored by Angelo Balanta, 35, once of QPR, the best player on the pitch.

It is a Grade II* listed building and in terms of quality, completeness and significance it is widely considered to be amongst the very best remaining English smock mills.” #UpminsterWindmill

Upminster Windmill, apparently one of nine remaining in London. Now owned by the London Borough of Havering and managed by the Friends of Upminster Windmill. Kew Gardens Tree of the (Belated) Day 7: Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia, the first North American tree introduced to Europe, in the early 17th century.
Planted in 1762, a survivor from Kew's original 5 acre arboretum and one of 5 Old Lions which remain. It survived a lightning strike in 2010.

The black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) was the first North American tree to be introduced to Europe, in the early 17th century.

This tree, planted in 1762, is a survivor from Kew's original five acre arboretum, which was developed by Princess Augusta (1719-1772). Today, the Arboretum spans most of Kew's impressive 326 acres. This black locust is one of the five trees referred to as the Old Lions - the trees which remain from the original five-acre planting.

This tree has thrived at Kew for over 250 years, even surviving a lightning strike in 2010 which removed much of its core. It is now held together by steel bands.Despite this, it still flowers and its hollows provide prime accommodation for nesting ducks.

The Genesis Exhibition: Do Ho Suh: Walk The House at Tate Modern ends on Sunday. I saw some of these works at his 2017 @victoriamirogallery Passage/s show and he’s become very popular since. He’s obsessed with the idea of home, important for all yet perhaps under represented as a theme in the arts.

So sad to hear Dave Ball has died, aged 66, peacefully at his London home. The Grid, producer and remixer but best known as half of Soft Cell, one of the all time great synth pop duos. I got perhaps the last ticket to see them at their huge O2 show in September 2018 and it was everything I’d hoped.

Fascination Zollverein by Thomas Stachelhaus is extended to November 2, for those who can visit Essen. 65 large format images of the preservation of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in the coking plant’s mixing plant: “Visitors thus experience industrial history right where it was actually written.”

Visit Germany for fairytale castles, Bavaria, Black Forest? Zeche Zollverein, Essen, in the Ruhr, is a different aesthetic, reputedly the most beautiful coal mine in the world, once among Europe’s biggest. Closed in 1986, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the Ruhr Museum & much more #Zollverein

Surely the world’s best rapid transit system? Worth visiting Wuppertal in Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia just to ride the Schwebebahn, the suspension railway, & its floating, flying or hanging trains. Opened in 1901, it runs for 8.3 miles through the city, mostly over the Wupper River #Schwebebahn

The common name monkey puzzle is said. to originate from the 19th-century barrister Charles
Austin. Upon seeing the tree at a dinner party, he remarked that its dense, sharp leaves would provide 'a puzzle for even a monkey to climb'.
When monkey puzzles mature, at around 100 years of age, they lose most of their lower limbs, revealing a tall, straight trunk.

Aesculus indica 'Sydney Pearce' has more flower panicles per branch than typical examples of o this species. It is a cultivated variety, or cultivar, • specifically grown to preserve these physical traits.
Its spectacular flowers were first noticed growing at Kew in 1887. This specimen was grown fram seed collected from that original tree, and planted on this spot in 1928. The cultivar is named after Sydney:
Pearce, assistant curator of Kew in the 1,930s.
