When I first stumbled across child sexual exploitation on the BR-116 in 2011, I was shocked to find a federal police survey that had found 262 places along the motorway where it was known children were sold for sex. But the latest figures just released show... 🧵
"How is it remotely possible to frame this horrific extravaganza of violence as the benign option, and the resistance to it — even when it comes from Jews themselves — as some kind of sublimated hatred, rather than the simplest act of conscience there is?"

Yet in the last two years Brazil's highway feds only carried out 31 law enforcement actions against CSE on the highways. EVEN SO during those actions they rescued 147 children. 85% were girls. 53.3% were aged between 6-15.

The worst road of all was the BR-116 with 2,398 places. The worst town was Teófilo Otoni, situated on the BR-116 in the north of Minas Gerais state, pop 137,000, where in one town alone they found 412 places known for child sexual exploitation - and only along the highway.

The state with the most places wasn't in the northeast region known for its deprivation and poverty, but Minas Gerais in the productive and comparably wealthy southeast region, 3,581 places known for CSE were identified along the motorways.

Along all of Brazil's federal highways they found 17,683 places 'vulnerable' to CSE. Reporting was done by local law
enforcement via an app. Although the term is 'vulnerable' it's likely that every place identified was where CSE was known to take place.

Today that number is 2,398, an increase of more than 900%. Some of the increase may be because of increased awareness, but we can reasonably conclude that the exploitation of girls on the BR-116 is much much worse.
