yes accepting gil from nation leaders is different to arson than accepting money from their own father. you don't get it they didn't Work for that money with their Skills. it's not Fair.

there are also arson's patrons, aymeric, hancock, etc.
their dad also was also one at some point, but arson quickly had a talk with him and refused any more money from his coffers. they did end up accepting a house from him but that was the end of it, their pride is too great to accept that

what doesn't help is there isn't a proper pokemon care mechanic, you just sit with them at cafes. doing nothing. no playing, no petting, nothing. there are many more flaws in this game but this is the one that made me particularly confused
