🏀🎞️Alright! The Golden State Warriors got the win against the Lakers.

Here's a lot of my thoughts running through the game:

All the respect. Chris Paul at his best is one of the best players of the century. One of the greatest pick & roll operators and playmakers ever. And impact metrics will love him even more than I do.

Also a hell of a rival to always beat for a while in that Warriors run 😁
Los Angeles Clippers guard Chris Paul is retiring after this season – his 21st campaign in the NBA. Paul is a 12-time All-Star, an 11-time member of All-NBA teams, a selection to the 75 greatest players list, nine-time All-Defense and the 2006 Rookie of the Year.

🏀🎞️ Shoutout to the great (& quickly developed) MPJ / Claxton chemistry.

The Nets also run these trendy 3-man elbow (or higher out) plays where a big passer holds as 2 guys screen for each other. And Nic can find MPJ on cuts or go hand off so he pulls up.

You get lots of in-flow handoffs as well.

🏀📊 Visualizing NBA offenses through behaviors of ball movement.

Plotting, at both team and player-level, passes attempted per ball touch x how many of those passes are directly leading to shot attempts.

Patterns of ball-swings vs pass-to-shot approaches - and how those mix - become visible.

🏀🎞️ The Nuggets took care of business in New Orleans but it wasn't a cakewalk and part of that was the play from Derik Queen.

He posted 30 points on 69.7 TS%, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 'stocks'.

Here's some quick throughs with clips 🧵⏬:

ensive rebounding component to their game: They are now 4th in the NBA in OREB%!

Right now, 8 of their 10 players >=100 MP are at least in the median of positional OREB Score, and half of them are above the 80th percentile!

🏀As a Warriors fan, allow me the small happiness of seeing Harrison Barnes get to this late stage of his career and still be such an efficient piece for the Spurs offense.

Weird to think he'll have spent almost 3/4 of his career out of Golden State by the end of the season.

🏀📊After a positive Anthony Black post, let's balance it out with this:

Even with a couple of makes in the last Orlando win, it's a difficult start to the season for Tyus Jones on all fronts.

The shooting is the bit that really is a total outlier, so it is worth visualizing.

🏀In his 3rd year for the Magic, Anthony Black seems to be improving his driving game in visible ways. I really like to see it.

Handle looks fluid, with more horizontal shiftiness as he controls the pace with fakes, decelerations and adjusts his finishing angles.

🏀📊I know 2nd-year players are meant to improve... but we can all agree that this sort of offensive juice from Kyshawn George is well beyond expected, right?

I was sure of his value as a Wizards core piece as at least a defender + connector. But this production is far beyond that.

🏀📊 It's been a particularly bad start, with the noise of the early season probably explaining the outlier nature of his On/Off offensive impact.

But there is a consistent trend of Zach LaVine never really having elite values here, contrasted to how effective he is as a scorer.

🏀📊 Overperforming expectations, these new Phoenix Suns have a ton of attacking and generating ball movement from that penetration.

This is evident when looking at the changes in Drives v Passes Per Drive for Goodwin, Booker, Allen, Brooks - as well as the addition of Gillespie

I am seen raising my hands in disbelief watching that insane shot. I miss Litos playing on our side...

Fui apanhado pelas câmaras a levar as mãos à cabeça quando o Litos fez esta loucura. Saudades de o ver neste pavilhão mas do nosso lado

I the love G-G PnR from Knueppel & LaMelo. Mostly due to Kon being such a smart off-ball mover and a real shooter.

They usually run it with flat spacing across the  baseline and just opening up the floor for the play, but there's also quick wing ghost screens, or plays where they have the -

🏀📊 Lauri Markkanen has been an absolute elite play-finisher so far this season.

This is exactly the best version of himself: Moving a ton off the ball, constantly coming off a screen or looking for a cut. And a ferocious finisher with space to ramp up.

🏀📊Quick check on Onyeka Okongwu:

Because yeah, after going 8/14 from deep against the Jazz, it's fair to say the shooting trend from the end of last season is bearing out.

He's more than doubled his catch-&-shoot volume from deep - and is hitting those pretty well thus far.

🏀📊 The Houston offense stands out as a story of this early season but the 3P% is actually insanely above what would be expected for their roster and the shots they have been taken.

The Rockets are a proper outlier in overperforming their predicted 3P% in this early season:

🏀📊 Keldon Johnson has been incredible crashing the glass this year for the Spurs, and it's coming a bit out of nowhere.

This massive leap in his effort to get offensive rebounds also makes him a much easier fit with the ever-increasing number of ball handlers in San Antonio.

🏀📊 With 7 offensive boards in the Pistons’ win over WAS, Jalen Duren has been an absolute beast on the boards.

And it's showing up across all rebounding stats to start the season.

He was famously the youngest player in the NBA as a rookie so it seems right that he's now coming into his own.

Not seeing the vision yet?

Seriously, the man will forever be associated with one of the worst and most inexplicable moves in the history of sports.

And the way this roster was built has done nothing but make it harder for the other gem that fell on his lap.

It was time.
Shams reporting with Tim MacMahon that Nico Harrison expected to be fired at a 10 am central time meeting (on X).

🏀📊Dyson Daniels has taken up a lot of the Hawks playmaking with the absence of Trae Young.

I always liked his passing, so I'm glad to see it deployed so heavily as we get a proper run of him having such a large role.

It's still early but his metrics have taken a fitting leap:

🏀Will Richard is a really good offensive rebounder for his size, and it speaks to his understanding of space and his sense of timing

Always consistent with his effort + motor and the shot has gone in so far (11/25 from 3).

Looks like he's played with Golden State for years.

🏀📊Josh Giddey has been turning himself into an elite transition force in the NBA. Part of that igoes through becoming much better at finishing at the rim.

The leap he's taken is partially a product of the small sample size so far. But the film backs him up as a more aggressive finisher.
