She/her. Faculty, @poynterinstitute.bsky.social. Previously Washington Post, Philly Inquirer, CBC News. Here to talk about local news, pizza toppings, and arbitrary absurdity. I don’t argue with people on the internet. Mostly Canadian.

🚨 Some personal news (are we doing that here?) 🚨

I’m leaving The Washington Post to join the faculty at @poynterinstitute.bsky.social, where I’ll focus on training funders on journalism ethics and how they can meaningfully support local news.
On my way to Mississippi where I will run a workshop for local news leaders and avoid aggressive diseased monkeys on the loose, I guess.

Serious question for sports fans: how do you handle how emotional and stressful this all is and then just go about your lives for an entire season I just do not understand

I can’t tell you how discombobulating this all is as someone who mostly does not pay attention to sports and then is suddenly watching <waves hands wildly> all this

The Testament of Ann Lee made me incredibly happy … that I don’t live in the 18th century. Also, I was happy when it was over.

Uh … guys … it’s literally a five-minute walk from the Rogers Centre, which has a pretty big retractable roof.

Happy Canada Day, folks.
I put all the Heritage Minutes in chronological order by event so you don't have to. 🇨🇦

(I was looking for this and couldn't find it, so it became a weird hobby. It genuinely may be of interest only to me.)

I will never get over airport rules.

Just saw a man chase a glass of prosecco with a double whiskey. Sir, it’s 7 in the morning.

Suuuuuper normal ad to see on the metro.

Living in DC is sometimes just bizarre.

Achievement: unlocked. I’m now friends with @historicacanada.bsky.social
We are impressed with your dedication, and amazed it never occurred to us to order our Heritage Minutes playlist chronologically! (We do have some thematic playlists, but the HM one is more or less added to whenever we release a new one).

Seriously, I gotta do this for Canada Day next year.

Anyone in DC want in, hmu.
For Canada's 150th birthday in 2017, I hosted a Canada Day party in which my invited guests and I watched every Heritage Minute in order while eating butter tarts, Nanaimo bars, Timbits, Coffee Crisps, ketchup chips, and other Canadian snacks. 🍁

There was SO MUCH quoting of all the classic lines!

Omg the @halifaxexaminer.ca wrote about my nerdy little Heritage Minutes project.

Thank you!

Is this 77-year-old Grace Jones hula hooping and belting it? Yes, yes it is.

I was THAT GUY recently and caught a mistake on the write up of a museum exhibit and “uh, actually”-ed the docent.

(Anyone know knows anything about Ikkyu Sojun knows he would never “enlighten” a sex worker about “the evils of her profession.”)
