This reminds me of a time several years ago when our son, daughter and friends went to see Gunther von Hagens' 'Plastination' exhibition, and we went to Highgate Cemetery. They thought our choice was weird, and we thought theirs was.

Here's "Trump'll Nail Ya" - a song about the #BBC legal crisis (set to the tune of the shanty "Drunken Sailor") which created a big internal debate about what's a gremlin and what's a mogwai. 🎶⚓️

... fingers crossed for an apology but not a daft and unnecessary settlement ...

This is gorgeous.
'Bredon Water,' (1871) lies near Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, it's a rare landscape for Frederick Sandys, a key member of the Pre Raphaelite circle. We can sense Sandys grappling with technical and conceptual issues of authenticity versus finish and originality versus convention.

Today’s #AutumnArrivalSpotlight is the Smew!

A rare and late winter visitor, these small, striking birds are a treat to spot on UK lakes.

Males sport a 'panda-like' black-and-white plumage, while females show off a chestnut cap.

Keep an eye out for these stylish divers! 😍

We will remember everyone.

Everyone who fought, who lived, who died, and every conscientious objector, too.

We will remember their sacrifice.

We will remember their belief in freedom, and the common humanity that unites us.

'The Line of the Plough.' (1919) John Arnesby Brown's painting was the first picture he made in the spring following the end of WW1. It suggests the start of the cycle of life and new beginnings after the shattered landscapes he witnessed in France and Belgium during the war.

We'll never know if it was just a one-night stand, or the start of a beautiful relationship!
Went to the disco on Sunday and copped off with Kevin.

If you’d like even more people to see these lovingly hand-curated postcards and their messages, remember: likes are lovely but re-posting costs nothing and spreads the thing like a benign virus. Or something.

I was just thinking how nice it was not to hear any fireworks tonight.
Then guess what - some really loud ones have just started.

My daughter has just sent me these photos. Ralph, who couldn't fight his way out of a paper bag, is literally defending a paper bag against the very territorially aggressive Marmalade.

I love these sorts of paintings, with all the detailed little figures on the ice and snow.
It's a cold winter's day but everybody has warm loaves of holiday bread! By my friends Jan Brueghel & Joos de Momper, 1612. Today is Joos's day.

If you've not heard of Sander, it's well worth looking up some of his photos - also historically interesting.
Widower, 1914 by August Sander.
“I hate nothing more than sugary photographs with tricks, poses and effects. So allow me to be honest and tell the truth about our age and its people...”

You don't have to be religious to appreciate the beauty of this carving, and the amount of work that must have gone into it.
Back in the 12th century, French sculptor Gislebertus carved this angel as (s)he appears to the three Magi as they dream, waking one with the delicate touch of a finger, and pointing her other forefinger toward the Bethlehem star (Cathedral of St Lazare, Autun)

I love the moonlight on the water in this picture.
'Moonlit River.' (c1917) More than any other artist, it was Whistler with his atmospheric paintings of the Thames, that had a profound influence on George Hyde Pownall - he specialized in moonlight scenes of this sort, usually with a full moon fairly central in the composition.

Love this!
Like his friend Francis Cadell, John Maclauchlan Milne saw the landscape of Iona in terms of pure colour. His paintings of the island (this is c1937) use a palette of bright greens, pinks, blues and mauve with touches of yellow, to capture the light.
