Clarity often comes after movement. When we keep planting our feet where we want to be, life starts to make sense one flash of insight at a time. When the way forward isn’t obvious, it doesn’t mean there isn’t a way. Perspective shifts as we move.

In order for us to be fully present, to experience life fully, we need to acknowledge and accept all our emotions and all parts of ourselves – the embarrassing parts as well as our anger, our rage, our jealousy, our envy, our self-pity, and all these chaotic emotions that sweep us away.

Self-talk isn’t just background noise. The way we talk to ourselves shapes how we respond under stress. One place to start today: notice a recurring thought that tightens your body and gently ask what a more supportive version might sound like.

Overthinking is often a protective response shaped by early environments. When we understand where it came from, we can respond with more patience and less self-criticism.

This is one of my favorite messages from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

It applies to the injustices going on in the world then and still today, and it applies to addiction recovery and mental health recovery too.

Whenever I feel a twinge of inertia or indifference, I remind myself of that feeling of awe I get every time I set foot in a library and realize that I can't absorb a fraction of that knowledge in my lifetime even if I spend every moment reading. There's so much out there to get curious about.

Growth rarely announces itself in real time. It usually shows up disguised as frustration, uncertainty, or effort. Challenges may be unpleasant, but they’re also honest teachers.

I'm looking forward to today's continuing education workshop. I signed up for this one in particular because the presenter wrote a book that's been a staple in my work for many years.

Clinicians: If you're available at 1pm ET today, this one is free and provides 1.5 CE credit hours.

We often measure success by what we accomplish. But real change happens in the process. The habits, insight, and self-trust we build along the way shape us long after the goal itself has passed. As Henry David Thoreau reminds us, what we become matters more than what we achieve.

Thoughts come to us whether we want them to or not. Changing the way we think is about two things.
1. It's about changing our perspective by learning as much as we can about the world outside ourselves.
2. It's about noticing our reactions to our thoughts and deciding to accept or reject them.

Almost everyone I talked to in the past few days said, "I can't believe another year has gone by." That sense of fleeting is as good a reason as any to dust off our dreams and reflect on what we want and how much we want it. Here's to a happy and fulfilling new year!

It's that time of year again. Studies show we are more likely to achieve our goals when we write them down - not just the big, overarching goals, but all the incremental mini-goals it'll take to get to the big ones. Remember: "Done is better than perfect" and "Progress over perfection."

We learn to handle difficulties through the practice of what clinicians call distress tolerance. It's an effective way to reduce the emotional connection we attach to stressful events and fearful feelings.

It all works together. Our energy, our motivation, and our quality of life are dependent on our willingness to exercise our bodies, our minds, and our spirits. When we don't attend to each of these aspects of ourselves, the part we neglect can atrophe.

We forget how effective the most basic coping skills really are. A single slow breath can interrupt that momentum just enough to help us reset. It's simple, but it works.

There's a saying: If you don't make time for wellness, you'll have to make time for illness. Do a quick body scan. Are your shoulders up around your ears? Teeth clenched? How's your posture - open & inviting or closed & withdrawn?
Other signs of stress: indigestion, migraines, & muscle tension.

Self-esteem doesn’t arrive in big dramatic moments. It’s built by practicing positive action. Whether we set an intention at the beginning of the day or reflect on our actions at the end of the day (or both), this practice has a steady impact on our sense of who we are.

External pressures, internal guilt, and old stories we’re still reacting to can build up inside us and show up as poor sleep, physical ailments, and tension in our relationships. As we see how much noise we’ve been living with, we realize how much relief we can find when we begin to clear space.
