The dominance of Geobacterales in hotspots of nitrate ammonification led us to study this overlooked physiology in the most representative species (T. lovley). Four years of hard work by my student Marcela Tabares with many surprises.

Adaptive responses of Trichlorobacter lovleyi to nitrite detoxification reveal overlooked contributions of Geobacterales to nitrate ammonification
Abstract. Poorly understood microorganisms “short-circuit” the nitrogen cycle via the dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium to retain the element in

The National Science Foundation sign on our Eisenhower Av building is now gone.

The NSF mural in the foyer is removed and torn off in sheets.

We were supposed to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the agency in May 2025. That never happened.

“When people rely on large language models to summarize information on a topic for them, they tend to develop shallower knowledge about it compared to learning through a standard Google search.”
Learning with AI falls short compared to old-fashioned web search
Doing the mental work of connecting the dots across multiple web queries appears to help people understand the material better compared to an AI summary.

Those of us in higher education have witnessed the alarming increase in food insecurity among students. Campus food pantries are a temporary fix but more is needed from universities to ensure that our students do not have to choose between food and education.

Fifteen winter coats. Good ones, not garbage. Hanging on the chain-link fence outside Lincoln Elementary. No note. No explanation. Just coats zipped up like ghosts waiting for bodies.

Of course. Visibility is key.

Also, when comparable papers exist in such different journals, people cite the one from the top journal, to give off the idea that their own work is more impactful ("look, the work I do is related to that done in glam journals!")

Why are we still stuck on #journal impact factors?

Are authors fairly judged by assessing the #journals in which their work is published? @bihutchins.bsky.social &co reveal that most influential papers are published in lower tier journals, and more authors would be better recognized with #ArticleLevelMetrics #ALMs @plosbiology.org 🧪 plos.io/4oV58Ed
