During childbirth, which is patently not true. Saying stuff like that just feeds people's skepticism. Not all scientific discovery is good or beneficial. Remember thalidomide? Worked wonders on pregnancy nausea, massively damaged over 100 kids in Canada before someone made the connection.

Similarly, it was pretty shocking to discover that extremely high rates of caesarean section, as seen in the privileged populations of Brazil (usually about 75%) actually led to higher rates of maternal deaths. The statement as posted would lead you to believe that until "science" most women died...

No, I didn't. It's a lot more complicated than "Science fixes everything". Vaccination (as opposed to vaccines) as part of a larger public health program improves health, as does clean water. People used to die in developed countries of cholera and typhoid before we figured out needing clean water.

Kevin, as much as I appreciate the sentiment, this isn't strictly true. Women in the global South die due to complications of pregnancy and birth at appalling rates, and it's not because they don't like science. It's due to lack of resources, food insecurity, unclean or scant water. Read up 1/

The same is true of all the murder mysteries in Iceland. It's not quite as murder sterile as Shetland (3-4 per year). The show is a tourism booster (was just there and loved it) although getting there can be challenging. Not for the faint of stomach.

Having just been to Scotland, that was my perception. My Uber drivers were all immigrant people of colour, as were store workers. The hotel we stayed at in Shetland was owned by Southeast Asians. My thought was that the people who want the UK to be whiter are in favour of crashing the economy.
