Pettiness and principles

Been thinking about this for a while and have come to the conclusion that the new Champions League - with its landfill football and its extendable table - is good, but not for the people it was meant to be good for. And that is ultimately quite funny. www.nytimes.com/athletic/598...
In the Champions League, less might not necessarily be more
The new Champions League may feel hollow at times but scratch beneath the surface and you might find stories to counter that notion

A start, and an end. Today’s my last day @nytimes.com. (Monday is my first @theathletic.bsky.social) So for my final newsletter, I wrote about what (vaguely) coaching my son’s u7 team has taught me about football, parenting, and unfortunately myself. www.nytimes.com/2024/11/15/w...
A Whole New Ballgame
What soccer, a recent foray into coaching and years of writing this newsletter taught our columnist about the game, and himself.

What a great year of clamour it’s been for England. The month everyone wanted Carsley as permanent manager. The fortnight Alexander-Arnold HAD to play in midfield despite having never really played there. Most of all, the week where Adam Wharton - decent player, no doubt - was the new Pirlo.

A lot of discussion lately about the reasons for the decline of Eng Lit A-level.

Are the Gove curriculum & exam reforms to blame?

I don't think so, because the decline of Eng Lit / the humanities more broadly is a global trend.

More here.
The fall of Eng Lit
What is the cause, is it a problem - and if so, what can we do about it?

Being nice is good but what this place really needs to properly ignite is a first weekend of club football to bring out the brilliantly petty, tribal bickering and refereeing conspiracies. Once we have that, we’re truly away
