Because Red Mage is a switch hitter, but can't do extra stuff with elemental damage (Black Mage can) or weaponize overhealing (White Mage can).

Originally, Yokai were supposed to be Legend Edition's version of "controllable summon" a la FF10. But it wasn't quite clicking until I looked at Yoko's design in Bravely Second and the idea of mixing summons with a voodoo-style Cheval came to mind.

When I commissioned the art for the races, I explicitly said "DO NOT GIVE ME D&D DWARVES" in my notes. Instead the references I sent were trench uniforms and mining gear.
