Things had not started out like this. The sweet and heady aromas that surrounded them as they desperately made love were not too unlike the fragrant scent of a certain nameless white flower. This flower had been offered up to the broken crown prince statue two months earlier at Xie Lian—and his new follower’s—makeshift residence at the Temple of the Crown Prince in Lang-Er Bay. Amidst angry words, that flower had been crushed in Xie Lian’s palm, and then beneath his boot, dirt and gristle mixing with pulverized, perfumed petals. It turns out, the hopes and well-wishes of a believer could be that easily shattered, the quiet and humble bravura of young love that easily cast aside. The white flower may have once been beautiful, a bud growing and finding its place in the world, but such efforts were pointless. No matter how resplendent the bloom, in the end a flower would always wilt. There was no place for failures or try-hards in this world. A discarded flower would never be held or appreciated again.
