The Castle of Otranto, written by Horace Walpole [1764], earned him the title of the Father of the #Gothic novel. Set in a haunted castle, this tale was inspired by a nightmare Walpole had at Strawberry Hill House, his Gothic-styled home.

As I plow through writing my own trilogy (currently 3/4 thru Vol II), I am encouraged by #JRRTolkien’s persistence & dedication to his body of work within the LOTR. As he wrote, he didn’t realize the momentum it would gather. He wrote out of love for his story.

In Medieval Europe, esp. France, Germany & Italy, cats were associated w/witchcraft & the occult. This led to the phenomenon of “feline witch trials.” One such trial accused a group of cats of making a pact w/the devil. Hence, they were burned at the stake.
