What society thinks disabled people want to hear:
“You’re so brave!”
“We look past your disability!”

What disabled people actually want to hear:
“We acknowledge your disability and will happily accommodate your needs.”
“You can marry without losing your benefits.”
“We’d like to offer you the job.”

Under 5% of all TV characters have a disability.

Only about 21% of these characters are played by disabled actors.

This is why authentic representation of the disabled community matters.

It is so refreshing to finally see disabled actors portraying disabled characters.

In terms of authenticity, there is no substitute for disabled lived experience.

Apartments will have 100 units.

However, only 2 of those units will be ADA compliant or accessible.

On top of that, they are usually occupied by non-disabled individuals.

So, those who need an accessible unit will often end up waiting years before one even opens up.

Instead of encouraging sellers to remove accessibility features prior to listing, there should be a system to help disabled buyers and their realtors locate accessible properties.

So few accessible properties exist in the first place, and removing accessibility features makes them even fewer.

Lots of wheelchair users prefer tubs to showers.

Tubs can also be made to be more accessible to many via a lift or initial design.

Showers should not be the only option for an accessible bathroom.

There are too many people “against” things they do not understand.

Being “against” something requires a basic comprehension of said thing to begin with.

Removing the harmful narrative that wheelchair users only dream of being magically cured and able to walk is a huge win for the disabled community. #Wicked #WickedForGood

Mobility aids are not restrictive.

Inaccessibility is restrictive.

Realtors should be more well-versed in accessibility.

If they are able to locate very specific WANTS for clients, such as certain style porches, materials, etc., then they should be able to locate general specific NEEDS for clients, such as wider doorways, larger bathrooms, and ramps in searches.

Accessibility is not optional or “would be nice.”

Accessibility is absolutely necessary.

Wheelchairs and mobility aids are not optional luggage.

They are a person’s legs, stability, safety, and often only way of getting around.

Yet, they are considering not holding airlines accountable for damaging them.

When playing video games as a wheelchair user, I always find it more natural when I get to control a character that rolls.
