Some restaurants leave you feeling warmly toward them. Tumbling out of a tiny, hole-in-the-wall on Liverpool Street in Darlinghurst, Nomidokoro Indigo is one such place. We stumbled upon this small collection of mismatched tables set under a retractable canvas awning a few weeks back. #food
Recreating the glowing briefcase scene from Pulp Fiction, a white-gloved waiter opens a suitcase to reveal a backlit collection of sake cups. It’s just one way Oborozuki endeavours to make your night special. Another way is with high staffing ratios… #food
Warm currents seem to have extended the bluefin tuna season in NSW, which normally runs from June to September. Chef Rio Chun Man Lau is taking full advantage of this at Gou Sushi with good value bluefin tuna sets ($28). #food
With only its breeze block bar visible at the rear of one of Central Park’s residential towers, Hongdae Pocha BBQ is not the easiest spot to locate. It makes up for the discretion on the outside with flashy neon, pulsating tunes, and convivial chatter, within. #food
For a neighbourhood restaurant that gets it right, head to the gloriously red and golden Attenzione in Redfern. All sex aside, their grilled pastrami ($28) is going to be the best tongue ever inserted into your mouth. The dish has remained on the menu since they opened for good reason. #food
Sippenham is geared toward Sydenham locals. They’re young (the average age is 25–39), they’re mortgaged up (the median house price is $1.6 million & 66% of people own), and too busy renovating to cook lasagne. Viewed in this light, I can see why the beef shin lasagne ($34) is popular… #food
Wan’s Cantonese is part of the cluster of new upmarket Chinese restaurants that have popped up in the last year. You might recognise its architectural bones from previous reviews for Soi 25, Appethai, & Spice I Am. It’s the first time in my memory this Darlinghurst spot has been Cantonese. #food
Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce says it's an honour to conclude his term in a "dignified manner". Also Barnaby: #auspol
Baking 101 is new to Stanmore. It has a glitzy look but with oddly chosen burgundy reminiscent of mainstream outlets like Michels Patisserie & Bakers Delight. The darkly baked range didn’t look particularly appealing so I just walked away with an (only slightly overcooked) cheese twist ($7)… #food
After trying the mortadella at Hey Rosey, I was prompted to revisit Cured Orange. Former Sydneysider, Stefan Birmili, opened this tiny purveyor of artisan handcrafted cured meats in Orange in 2018. On this visit we picked up cheese kransky, chilli pancetta, mortadella, & house cured bacon. #food
A pink fur and sequin-studded peacock and a scale model of P&O Cruises 60s cruise liner, Oriana, are just two of the curiosities you’ll find on display at The Oriana Retro Hotel and Resort. This is another motel upcycle, this time in Orange. The 1969 property is owned by Espen Harbitz… #food
The Concordia Club is a convivial space aimed at preserving German culture. They’ve maintained this focus through everything from resisting the spread of Nazism among their members in the 1930s, and waves of post-war immigration that saw them open up their membership to Austrians & Swiss… #food
As with most imaginary lines we mark onto maps, people in border towns like Mildura operate across them. So you’ll find the Mildura winery, Trentham Estate, on the NSW side of the Murray River. While most visitors take the 15km drive over the bridge from town, some arrive by houseboat… #food
Noi Petersham recently had a birthday! Last Monday night they played their greatest hits in a 6-course menu ($95/person), with dishes plucked from across their six years of operation. We joined the BYO-bearing ($15/bottle) faithful, which included locals like Stewart White & Claudia Chan Shaw. #food
Chef Hugh Piper’s Comté truffle tart ($18) at Hey Rosey in Orange is perfection. Balanced by a single pickled and grilled shallot, the fluffy cloud of cheese gives way to silken custard barely constrained in crisp shortcrust pastry. #food
Just up the road from Mildura’s Kar-Rama Hotel, Twenty Seven Cafe and Providore does a good breakfast. While it didn’t have the coffee or the vibe of Brass Monkey—we did dine early on a public holiday—they make an equally enjoyable chilli eggs ($25) for almost the same price. #food
With a population of around 400, Goolgowi isn’t a large town, so its eating opportunities are limited. However it’s well-placed for lunch on the long Mid Western Highway haul between Mildura and Orange, which is how we found ourselves eating at the Metro Goolgowi Roadhouse. #food
Fading original motel signage from the Kar-Rama Motel’s 60 year tenure on Mildura’s Sturt Highway motel strip has been preserved. The motel is otherwise unrecognisable, bar for the architectural bones of two original wings. It’s had a Palm Springs-inspired, mid-century modern makeover… #travel
The Mildura sun has eaten away at the signage for KKings Palace Chinese Restaurant, turning it mosaic. On the roof, the plastic signage is cracked and no longer illuminated, though faded coloured bulbs along the eaves still make it feel festive. #food
Some global cities we know the character of without ever having visited. If anyone mentions a night in New York, Las Vegas, Tokyo, or Bangkok, most people have a good idea of what that might look and taste like. Pop-Up Meyhane is a way of inserting Istanbul into our collective consciousness. #food
Weekend breakfast reservations are necessary at Mildura’s popular Brass Monkey cafe, with walk-ins relegated to sidewalk tables. Not only are those outside seats warm this time of year, you also miss out on admiring the extraordinary vaulted ceiling lined in original pressed tin. #food
Nothing says the complimentary bread isn’t fresh like serving it as toast, even if you pipe whipped butter so it looks fancy. I found The Spanish Grill in Mildura to be both overpriced and underwhelming. The menu is a cultural collision that takes some good ideas and fritters them away. #food
