Spoke to a guy from California who claims to have moved 3/4 into crypto after the last US election. Didn't trust the admin to run the economy properly. What if crypto goes down even more? He 'knows' that can't happen. Once again I failed to talk someone away from crazy risk.

BMO Investorline's AI recommends leverage for me. This is clearly a bad idea for someone who is retired. It also seems strange to get this kind of advice from a platform that is supposed to be "order execution only."

I watched hoarding up close for many years. It's a powerful psychological force. If you have a storage unit, consider the possibility that you're just hoarding.

Modern Portfolio Theory treats correlations between investments as constant across the spacing of samples (monthly, annually, etc.), but this isn't how it works in the real world. Here's an example to illustrate the problem: www.michaeljamesonmoney.com/2010/09/unde...

By the time I'm forced to convert my RRSPs to RRIFs, I will have been withdrawing from my RRSPs for more years than I contributed to them. Yet they'll still have enough assets for my future. That's the power of compounding.

The complex rules around credit card points are designed to make shopping addicts feel like they're playing 3D chess when they're really just feeding their addiction. If you pay interest then you've lost the game.

This is my 8th year of drawing down my RRSP to reduce lifetime taxes. Despite this "RRSP meltdown," during that time my balance is up 75%! This stock market performance has been amazing. I keep reminding myself not to get used to it.

Filling out a T3 trust tax return for a family member who has died can be bewildering. There are dozens of incomprehensible questions to answer and amounts to fill in. ChatGPT does a great job of explaining each part. In contrast, CRA's T3 Trust Guide is mostly useless.

I updated yesterday's post on contradictory retirement plans to include the 10% OAS increase at age 75. It doesn't make a material difference to the discussion, but it's more accurate this way.
