would be v down but between schedule and timezones dunno if I'm gonna be able to make a draft work 😫
My favourite material is in some of the later trial scenes, where the more creative use of voiceover feels really incisive, only highlighting further that the overall style doesn't really work for me.
Landmarks: Powerful story, but I think the edit is kind of a mess, a deluge of digressions leading to a film that feels bloated and haphazard when the matter at hand is urgent and gut-wrenching.
use lines from this in daily conversation practically every week
juggling- the abruptness of its final section makes perfect thematic sense, but acts like a wet blanket by its very nature and I don't think the film manages to sufficiently navigate this.
And yet, despite all of this, I just don't think all of these things hang together to make an especially satisfying film? I think it is something about the balance of weight across the different threads the story is
The Secret Agent: I like the approach to creating a rich world, full of characters. I like the performances, the digressions, the stakes. I like the eventual conclusion, the powerful way it underlines what the film is about, it's clever!
It helps that Diabolik is a *perfect* fit for their approach, and that this is probably the best conceptual hook they've come up with- I don't love the way it concludes but the twists along the way feel genuinely smart- lots of fun!
Reflection in a Dead Diamond: Every time a new Cattet/Forzani film comes out I think to myself "hmmm, maybe I'm over their shtick now" and every time I find myself caught up in their ridiculous, dazzling style.

Satellaview+ deserves more attention: an emulator-based (so far) recreation of the '90s service that let players download games to their Super Famicoms via satellite. Today there's a big SFC in the in-game town in honor of the console's 35th birthday and last month they added a damn Spirit Halloween

that is properly inspired by Gregg Araki and John Waters, so obviously made with love and aware that sexy and silly doesn't preclude you having an edge and having a lot of fun in the process!!
Fucktoys: Very stylish and fun flick that transforms the forgotten parts of America into a colourful, bizarre funfair. Rough around the edges but god does it feel nice to see what should be a a24-tier smash
get at some fun ideas about art without being heavy-handed, mining its core hook for consistently fun results. The effect was only enhanced by an intense feeling of familiarity I felt when watching Agustina Muñoz- afterwards I confirmed I've never seen her on screen before in my life.
Ariel: Was worried that this would be a little academic, but I should have trusted in Patiño (whose last film I had really enjoyed). Here he has created something playful, silly and wholly charming, reminiscent of the works of postmodernists like Italo Calvino. It manages to
range of ideas. This one looked good (though even that felt slightly at odds with its goals) but did not beat the allegations, I found it fundamentally boring, doing not near enough to escape a staid premise. The last line was kind of laughable... Extremely not for me.
Magellan: Probably should have known I wouldn't like this, but didn't expect to be left this cold. Historical fiction is something I often find to be a little bit of a dead end, the end set in stone from the start and the space for creation around that often landing on a painfully limited
