Course: Supporting people with MND using acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), starting on 29/09/2025
This 9-week course introduces ACT as a proven and practical intervention to support people with MND. Designed for psychologists, it provides a deep dive into the ACT model, with a focus on its application to the unique challenges faced by people with MND. You may expect to dedicate up to 3 hours per week to the course. The course is divided into weekly modules, combining self-paced learning, interactive live sessions and practical application:
week 1: introduction to MND and ACT
week 2: acceptance, defusion and self as context
week 3: contact with the present moment, values and committed action
week 4: live role-play and discussion
week 5: consistent responding and care conceptualisation, suicide and end of life
week 6: indicators of psychological inflexibility
week 7: live role-play
week 8: adapting ACT for MND and troubleshooting

The course can help HSCPs collaborate to provide multidisciplinary, person-centred care. It includes supporting resources, learning activities and forums to exchange ideas with fellow participants. Next course starts on 15 September and can be completed at your own pace for free. Over 200 people completed the course since its launch in 2021. They've said: "I liked the variety of resources available and they will be useful moving forward" "I found the course very interesting and will certainly apply the knowledge I've gained" "I enjoyed learning from everyone, especially as we were from different area" "I now feel more confident approaching the MDT"
