mayhaps Demian just did a funny and turned into the Umbra bastard sword after dying in the 2nd smoke war timeline
since in the novel, after ""dying"" he becomes a part of Sinclair/something within him
in other words, Demian still accompanies him but in a different form just like the novel :,)
