prequel for my upcoming mecha short comic... stay tuned for that by wednesday 🤘

Panel 1: Sledge (middle-aged man in a leather vest) and The Kid (teen boy in a checkered flannel) walk down a flight of stairs between two mechas.
Sledge: Y'know, kid, if you're looking to be alone, / you can always go to your room. You don't have to hide out in...
Panel 2: Sledge gestures backward at one of the mechas. The Kid raises his eyebrows.
Sledge: ...the cockpit of your literal weapon of war.
Kid: Is that how you see the mechas? No wonder you don't like being around Raphael.
Panel 3: Sledge looks down at The Kid, struggling to find the right words. " respect Raph. And I can handle it. But...I hope that one day I won't have to, y'know?"
Panel 4: Sledge smiles wistfully. "That's what we all want, isn't it? A world without this needless war..."
Panel 5: Sledge stops, noticing The Kid has fallen behind. "...Kid?"

Panel 1: Sledge looks back to see The Kid staring up at the winged mecha Metatron.
Kid: It's not about what I want. It's about what has to be done, and whether I'm capable of doing it.
Panel 2: The Kid is shown from the side in full silhouette, his face unreadable. "When I'm pillting Metatron, I fight. That's all I have to do. And being here with it reminds me of that feeling. Like I'm exactly what I need to be-"
Panel 3: Sledge looks down at The Kid, concerned.
Kid: No more...
Panel 4: The Kid looks to the side, avoiding Sledge's gaze. "...and no less."

So many people have buckled under the pressure of propaganda and lies; some have given up hope for a better world; some have taken others' lives, or even their own, and you've watched. This is what we want, right? It's what we do with our free will."

Panel 1: A faceless man looks back at a cloud of smoke. The text reads, "My sister's fiance is working at a lithium mine this summer. Just the other day, they unearthed a pocket of toxic gas." Panel 2: A horde of faceless men flees from the spreading cloud of smoke. The text reads, "He and the other workers ran full tilt for a quarter mile to escape the rolling cloud." Panel 3: The cloud dissipates, and a man lies limp on the ground. The text reads, "He had been told, 'If someone can't run anymore, leave them. They're as good as dead.'"

Panel 1: The man in the church stands between the rows of pews. He says, "He took that job because he and my sister need the money. I don't blame him. And I can pray on and on for you to bring him home safe...but he's choosing to risk his life every day, because he can't find a better option. So if he dies...what will you say to him when you meet him in heaven?" Panel 2: The man looks to the front of the church, hands up, with a pained grimace. He says, "'You're reaping what you've sown'?" Somehow I don't think that covers it." Panel 3: The man turns away, saying, "Maybe free will was a simple enough gift when you created the world. But we've made it a little more complicated."

merry christmas, a friend was screensharing okami so i drew some shitty amaterasus while watching
