The first episode of our Children of Fear campaign - a campaign blog blog.monkeyx.games/2026/01/18/c...
Children of Fear - Episode #1
20 September 1923, Peking. In the Foreign Legation Quarter the air always feels a little staged, as if the city has been asked to stand politely behind a rope while the West takes its tea.

Wrote a remix of @irny.bsky.social's Terminus scenario based on running it a couple of times which I hope helps other GMs wanting to run this: blog.monkeyx.games/2026/01/17/t...
Terminus: Cthulhu Hack remix
I really like TERMINUS. It’s got that specific London-transport dread: fluorescent logic, wayfinding that assumes you’re compliant, the sense that the building is designed to move bodies efficiently…

Hillfolk, a talk-first RPG where drama is the engine, tokens bribe you to give in, and fights are commercial breaks. I compare it with other games about communities: a|state & Salvage Union. When to pick conversation over clocks or mechs. Prestige TV at the table.

Hillfolk, Talk First, Fight Later
Hillfolk sits on that part of my shelf where the “conversation-forward” games congregate like gossiping aunties at a wedding. But I didn’t come to it for the soap. I came looking for a low-magic…

'It is written in the Disks of Mishakal that evil, by its very nature, will always turn in upon itself. Thus it becomes self-defeating.'

I was slower moving but don't miss it.

Move Bluesky has forced me to confront what I want from this kind of service. I've mostly moved off the tech, AI and philosophy strands and have a hard block / unfollow regular politics posters policy now. Better for my mental health.

5E and the culture around it really doesn't support different rates of advancement. Even though spellcasters outshine martial classes a great deal after the first couple of levels.

It's the ninth War in the Old World @badmooncafe.bsky.social - the one day tournament I've had the pleasure to organise for the past 2 years.

I've quit every other platform except Bluesky, Discord and WhatsApp (Signal is used but doesn't feel like social media yet).

I'd quit WhatsApp if not for social groups that use it.

Discord has the most reach. Bluesky is more cliquey than Twitter was but small price to pay to avoid the fash

January is off to a decent start TTRPG wise.

Yesterday = Session Zero for the Children of Fear campaign that I've been planning for a few months.

Today = GMing Delta Green A Victim of the Art (first of two sessions)

Tomorrow = Back to playing in Mythic Bastionland

Sometimes the best design is just getting out of the way of people having fun.

The assumption that (aesthetic) value judgements ("it is not good") are opinions might betray a belief that there's nothing objective about them. I'm not sure that's true.

I so wanted to love Numera. I bought so many books of it! But everytime I played it... it felt empty as a game. The character options didn't seem to really matter.

I think Cypher is objectively a bad system. When the mechanics are vaccuous window dressing... that's just bad design.

Imagine going to a gaming con and not getting to play a game you fancy playing because of on the spot sign ups. What kind of hell is that?

The really interesting story is the ones that got away. The PCs that refused to die. That haunt him. Those elusive TPKs...
