In a nutshell:
Freshwater fishes🐟remain underrepresented in the CMS appendices. We argue that better links between research, science communications, policy development & CMS implementation can help enhance conservation of these important species!

🚨🚨🚨Published: our comment piece in @natrevbiodiv.nature.com, an output from last year's workshop on Migratory Fishes at Lake Tahoe, hosted by Zeb Hogan & the University of Nevada Reno.
Our new paper in @natrevbiodiv.nature.com highlights the untapped potential of CMS for enhancing the conservation of migratory freshwater fishes, which are currently underrepresented in Appendices I & II of CMS. Check the full text here: rdcu.be/eXOlk

I can't wait to start implementing this plan. It's such a pleasure to work with this group of people - musselheads are amongst the best!

These goals are directly supporting existing strategies such as the @fmcs-mollusk.bsky.social's conservation strategy, and major IUCN Species Survival Commission Red List assessment projects for mussels.

3. grow a community of practice in freshwater health and freshwater mussel conservation across AZA
4. develop and activate a resilient coordinated community to advance the conservation education and communication about freshwater mussels and healthy freshwater systems across AZA.
October 29, 2025 at 2:12 PM
Over the next 3 years - we will:
1. develop a resilient network of organizations and individuals to advance the conservation of North American freshwater mussels
2. build the capacity of AZA partners to assess the conservation status and extinction risk of freshwater mussels (to be continued...)
