I dag havde vi på arbejdet besøg af folk fra ydelsesservice som skulle informere om de nye kontanthjælpsregler, og jeg skal lige love for, at de har sørget for at ramme de “rigtige”. Under forførende overskrifter som “enklere kontanthjælpssystem” og “børn får fritidtillæg” og “medicintilskud” får ⬇️

Exactly. They are trying to sell us the idea that adoption can be fixed by having the state take over and ratifying the Haag Convention.

But why you would admit to committing grave human rights violations for the past 60+ years and then do nothing to end it?

South Korea is a very wealthy country. There is zero need for them to carry on exporting children.

I would however like to acknowledge and thank all the adoptees who worked tirelessly with the TRC. Without them we would never have got this far.

That's nice, but an apology does not make up for the 200,000 families ripped apart. It also doesn't offer any compensation.

I also note that he says that South Korea was once "stigmatized" for exporting children and that there have been "cases".

- None of my friends or colleagues had heard about it. Most of them couldn't even point to Denmark on a map and could not care less.

- I lived in UK at the time and the only reason I knew about it was because my Danish friends and family kept writing me concerned messages telling me to keep quite about being Danish so I wouldn't get attacked.

What followed was decades of protests, diplomatic nightmares and political shenanigans. I won't bore you with all of it, but I will say these things:

- Denmark handled the situation in the worst possible manner.

- Danes could not shut up about it, which made it worse.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of one of the stupidest, and most avoidable, diplomatic crisis in Denmark.

In 2005 a Danish newspaper printed some cartoons depicting the prophet Muhammad to demonstrate free speech. Denmark being the land of hygge, had no idea what they just got themselves in to.

He wants to go. Not just because he loves Korean fried chicken, but also because he is genuinly curious and likes travelling.

I am so lucky and grateful that he wants to travel with me. Spend time with me. Eat with me.

But it's expensive and time consuming.

Not least because I want to bring my son.

Sharing the experience with him is special to me. I'm hoping to be able to pass just a little bit of Korean heritage down to him.

I'm planning on going to Korea next year. I haven't been since 2023.

I love when one of my fellow Korean adoptees go, so I can follow their posts and pretend it's me. Take notes on what to do, see, eat.

I wish I could go more often. Twice a year would be perfect. Even once a year.
