I wound up translating up to a cliffhanger in the pulp fiction murder mystery I'm working on. WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT!?! I'm on the edge of my seat

I kinda needed this today. Thanks Hank, thanks Alina

Oh heeeeeeeeey, I have seen that around and it did seem cool!

I object to neither spice nor wholesomeness, so I think I'm neutral on that. I mean, I suppose the natural bridge is literary romance, no? Like, stuff you'd recommend on the prose, but is also technically a romance all around?

I'm so glad! It's a genre I've underexplored. Some of that is residual snobbishness I need to crush, but some of it is not knowing where to start! Recs?

How's that going for ya?

Laszlo Krasnahorkai fan vs. Ann Carson fan is the hot new false binary I summoned into being, but it doesn't really exist

I'm a translator of Yiddish and Hebrew poetry, prose and scripture, and I'm easing my way back into my long form projects, which are books by the New York humorist Yosel Cutler, the Mexico City poet Jacobo Glantz, and a work that hybridizes a detective story from Der Forverts with my own writing.

This is a really interesting question. I don’t have a great reasoned answer, but my personal instinct is if it’s a philosophy text, as I suppose it is, it deserves more universalism, while otherwise literary prose should be about evoking the feel you’re going for, the era. Does that make sense?

My favorite moments of this fascist hell scape is when these fucks turn against each other in ever increasing hysterics of performing toxic masculinity or some other fascist trait. It reminds me of those episodes of GI Joe where Cobra Commander and Destro can’t get along, so like, it all falls apart

I am trying to trust myself and my work in that soft middle ground, of being evaluated and appraised and weighed. I think my work has the goods. I think it's what these people, these middle men, my collaborators, I think it's what they want and need. I think my readers are out there. But it is hard
mordecaimartin.net
Agents, Editors, Copy-Editors, Fact Checkers, Publishers. They insert themselves between us and being read and they are the people we want and need to collaborate with. it makes a difficult interim between writing the last word and the completion of the work, in front of the eyes of the reader.

Writing is an odd art; because of time constraints (and opportunities! To slow down and be read slowly! What a gift!) involved, and because of the history of publication and of editing, we have a lot of what might impolitely and incorrectly be called "Middle men" in between us and our audience.

The work has to be read to be finished, by a real reader, who comes across it doing something else or seeks it out or just is a fan. Too often in my case, that reader becomes a person in my life, and it's hard to get them back to being a reader. But all the same, that's who needs to finish the work.
mordecaimartin.net
I think a lot about how part of the completion of the work, is being read. And not just by your dad or your wife or someone who's sitting there while you anxiously stare at them, waiting for a long enough pause to say "What'd you think of the twist?!"

New post up on Blue Violet, my Substack. It’s not just about Barbie tho “Barbie was one of my earliest influences, her plastic proportioned body dressed and undressed in my hands, where I learned what arms, breasts, stomach, and thighs were supposed to look like.”

Reading social media and feeling the usual feelings, I should say more, I should say it now, I should not wait to build an audience, I have to build an audience. But countering it with the delicious slowness of my process. It takes time to do what I am doing. It takes time to write, to translate.
