“I’ve lived here for a long time, and I’ve never seen so many police cars.”

ICE’s occupation in Memphis, the largest Black-majority city in the US, has reshaped daily life, keeping kids out of school and parents from work, turning shopping into a mission that risks families being torn apart.
I'm a veteran criminal justice reporter. I've never seen anything like ICE-occupied Memphis.

When Customs and Border Protection and Commander Gregory Bovino move into town, so does Whistlemania.

Activists create and distribute thousands of 3D-printed whistles, and their piercing cries are used to signal that immigration agents are nearby.

We hope to continue covering waste and corruption in DHS contracting. Reupping this story we did back in October on a question "self-deportation" contract that went to a new company run by a guy with links to top DHS officials. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

The city is suspended in a state of grief and unease. Downtown looks like an empty movie set. Some schools and daycares are still closed.

The open ones are sending worried parents reminders of security measures and not letting children play outside.

Trump's latest vanity project? Renaming the Kennedy Center to the “Trump-Kennedy Center."

As @artcrimeprof.bsky.social told us, the president's obsession with remaking Washington in his own image is about one thing:

Power.

The Sydney massacre unfolded in the aftermath of the shooting at Brown University, in Providence, Rhode Island.

To know both countries is to watch, in split screen, two similar societies diverge radically in how they respond to an atrocity.
Two countries. Two tragedies. One huge difference.
