📖🩸 Evil Dead Rise (2023)

In this week’s episode, we dissect the most recent entry in the franchise that moves the horror from the woods to an apartment building. This was my first time watching an Evil Dead film! Tune in to hear my thoughts!

Yeah, I don't know why I do this to myself! 😫
I need to mix in some good films to have a more balanced diet!

Even though I'm not a big horror fan, I watch scary stuff in October. My essential list includes:

Bram Stoker's Dracula
The Witch
Beetlejuice

I enjoyed the soundtrack! Listened to it immediately when I got home from beginning to end and then put it on again and drifted off to sleep while listening. I mean that as a positive. It’s more mellow than Legacy’s soundtrack. It’s like the soundtrack for The Social Network.

We are not doing an episode on Tron: Ares but I wanted to share some brief thoughts.

Happy #LetterboxdFriday My #LastFourWatched were a random assortment of bad films with Tron: Ares being the best of the bunch. 😅

This was one of the major points I brought up during our episode on Tron: Legacy. Tron was NEVER popular. Disney just keeps testing the waters with it because they own it.

Pretty confused by how TRON became a big-budget movie franchise. Was it a bit hit when it came out? No. Did it become a big hit on video/TV? Also no. Do people have fond nostalgic memories of it? Eh kinda but not really. Was it secretly great and critically acclaimed? No again

I found this film to be very dull and uninteresting despite the potential of the premise.

I think M Night is a great dad because he’s allowing his daughters to live out their dreams in films he’s producing or directing, but as a filmgoer it’s just poor quality. 😬

I’ve only walked out of two movies.

1. Conan the Barbarian (2011) - It couldn’t hold my attention so I left.

2. Dune Part One - I’m used to long films, but time slowed down. Checked my watch, saw an hour left, knew it was a two parter, so I tapped out. Finished it at home when it hit streaming.

Dana recounts times he’s walked out of a movie. What have you ever walked out of and why?

Despite Olivia Wilde looking the part of the bad-ass heroine in Tron: Legacy, the film quickly shifts her to a damsel in distress. One of the script stitch-ups we discussed with our guests from @vaguelynerdypod.bsky.social was changing a scene near the end when Quorra surrenders instead of fighting.

Absolutely loved this pick since I am a huge Godzilla fan!

I enjoy almost all the films in some way. It’s interesting to see the franchise evolve over time, but this film is still the one I revisit the most.

I remember suggesting it to a friend who watched it and was surprised it was so scary!
moviepostmortem.bsky.social
I’m embarrassed because I haven’t bought mine yet. 😅

Once I decide on the format, I’ll get the ticket. Seems like it’s all large screen format and half of them are 3D. 🤔

I’ve raved about Smile 2 before, so obviously that is a favorite.

Another favorite is Psycho 2. Surprisingly enjoyable for a legacy sequel.

Our guests from @vaguelynerdypod.bsky.social clustered around the same scores that we did for Tron: Legacy.

The new film Tron: Ares will be in theaters on Friday. Are you excited to see it?

This image is a Movie Postmortem review graphic for Tron: Legacy (2010).

On the left side, there’s the official Tron: Legacy movie poster showing Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde standing in glowing blue suits beneath a vertical beam of light, symbolizing the film’s digital world aesthetic.

On the right side, the review text reads:

“Dazzling visuals, great score, and cool LED-trimmed vehicles. Hedlund and Wilde look the part, but the thin plot drags after the arena games. This legacy sequel (that often feels like a remake) is a lot of style with very little substance.”

Below the text are individual star ratings (out of 5) from each Movie Postmortem host and guest:
	•	⭐⭐⭐⭐½ — Jae
	•	⭐⭐⭐½ — Reggie
	•	⭐⭐⭐ — Cheryl
	•	⭐⭐⭐½ — Isaiah

One of my favorite films as well.

It would be funny if something butter related was an option for the snack.

I love your creative combos! For Dick Tracy, I was thinking Sin City or The Shadow.
moviepostmortem.bsky.social
When I was growing up slashers were the dominant horror characters, but The Lost Boys was cool. Outside of that, I think most of my exposure to vampires were older comedic takes like The Munsters.
I think Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Let The Right One In are amazing! Both of those have me hooked!
moviepostmortem.bsky.social
I haven’t watched that in a long time!

This is fun! I like that it’s a curated list of good films so you know you’re not committing to watching any duds, but part of me wishes there was a version that was all bad movies! “Oops all crunch berries” style!

I like that there are two from The Simpsons. I feel that any notable film or tv show has been referenced on the show at least once!

This clip from our new episode on Tron: Legacy, features Jae and Cheryl from @vaguelynerdypod.bsky.social perfectly describing the biggest "cause of death" most of us had for this film: the not quite ready for prime-time CGI used to create the de-aged Jeff Bridges. 😬

No. It’s still feels like a step in the wrong direction that was luckily abandoned.
