🧾Not all change is progress.
If planning is treated as admin, AI helps. But if planning is intellectual prep, no chatbot can replace the teacher’s mind.
🚸 Students can use Claude or ChatGPT to sidestep hard thinking.
Is that responsible use, or just a shortcut that hollows out learning?
We can’t “train” responsible use into a 10-year-old like we do software.
⚖️All technology is a trade-off.
AI might save teachers time. But at what cost? When we outsource planning, we risk outsourcing thinking—the core of great learning.
🧠 Whether you like it or not, AI is here. Pupils are using it. Teachers are using it. But are we ready for the trade-offs?
A 🧵 inspired by Neil Postman’s ideas on tech change, with thoughts on AI and education. 👇

All good things and I use AI for similar, but as I say, I think careful thought needs to happen at a societal and professional level before we jump right into this tech without considering potential consequences.

Want to dive deeper? This thread is based on EdWorkingPaper No. 24-1028, "Scaffolding Middle-School Mathematics Curricula With Large Language Models" by Malik et al. (Stanford University).
🚀 Implications? This research points to a future where AI can help personalize learning and make math more accessible for everyone. It also emphasizes the importance of guiding LLMs with expert teacher insights. #FutureofEducation
✅ Teachers preferred the LLM-created warmups for their alignment with learning goals, accessibility for struggling students, and overall readiness for classroom use. This suggests LLMs can be a powerful tool for saving teachers time and improving lesson quality. #TeacherSupport
🌟 Here's the mind-blowing part: The study found that LLM-generated warmup tasks, when prompted effectively, were rated significantly higher by teachers than even those created by expert educators! #ArtificialIntelligence
🤖 So, how can LLMs help? Researchers focused on using LLMs to generate "warmup tasks" designed to activate students' prior knowledge. This is a crucial part of effective scaffolding. #AIforTeachers
➡️ The study highlights the challenge teachers face in implementing standardized curricula due to varying student needs. Scaffolding is key to bridging this gap and boosting student outcomes.
🤔 What's "curriculum scaffolding"? It's how teachers adapt and add to existing materials to ensure all students can access and understand the curriculum, especially those below grade level. Super important for diverse classrooms!
