There's also a pretty big perception issue between the manga, where that portion of the fight from Spopovich's counterattack to the end lasts about 1 and a half chapters (or roughly 17 or so pages), and the anime, where it goes on for 2 full length episodes
As others mentioned there can be grinding involved, especially as a first time player. Would recommend an earlier Fire Emblem like FE7 or Path of Radiance as a first strategy game, where there is no grinding opportunities in between maps
