The prize is a recognition of the power of #collaborativejournalism. It belongs to every newsroom and journalist who made this work possible, with special thanks and admiration for Leyla Mustafayeva and our colleagues at Abzas Media still behind bars today.

On my end, I investigated why not a single one of these journalists’ deaths has led to an indictment. Through interviews and a review of internal documents, I found that the Israeli government has actively maneuvered to obstruct international investigations👇

“Where International Law Goes to Die”: Mechanisms Blocking Justice for Journalists and Civil Society
Since 2001, Israeli fire has claimed the lives of nearly 200 journalists—170 of them since the war on Gaza began. Yet, even in the most extreme cases, Israel has failed to hold anyone accountable.

While Sofía AJ investigated the targeting of journalist Fadi Al-Wahidi, who was shot in the neck during the army’s October incursion into Jabalia, @cecileski.bsky.social documented the endless horrors and displacement Fadi would’ve reported on 👉 shorturl.at/ruGsF

Still the work achieved was nothing short of remarkable. Despite no field access, the stories published make us all witnesses to the horrors taking place 🧵👇

ARIJ’s brilliant Hoda Osman captures this sorrow in her project overview: “even though we knew in advance that Part 2 would probably be no different than Part 1, that the likelihood of it leading to major investigations was slim, we had no choice but to keep investigating”👇

While I’m immensely proud to have coordinated this 5-month effort, it’s also the saddest sequel I’ve ever been part of. 9 months later, the number of journalists killed has risen to over 170. Among them was Mahmoud Isleem Al-Basos, who filmed for the #GazaProject just a week before he was targeted.

Quick geolocation by @annonemo.bsky.social of the deadly IDF strike on journalists in northern Gaza today.

While it's not clear where the journalists were filming before getting into the car, the location of the strike here is more than 3km from the border and IDF outpost constructed near it.
A satellite image composite of northern Gaza using March 2 SkySat imagery and February 25 PlanetScope imagery from Planet Labs. The imagery shows the northern border of Gaza with Israel as well as two IDF outposts near the border and the location where journalists were killed in an airstrike on their car. The strike location is approximately 3.2 kilometers from the nearest IDF outpost.
