A 1992 price list helps us understand how Gibson named the individual models of the M-Series. The key is the so-called family code (Page 1).
We also get help with the finish codes (Page 2).

What we know so far:

The first Gibson M-III guitars were probably produced in April 1991. The earliest known serial numbers are from April 05, 1991 (#90951XXX).

J.T. Riboloff had the original idea for the MIII, which was actually intended to be equipped with two pickups. However, management pointed to the popularity of equipping superstrats with two humbuckers and one single coil, so the MIIl was released with this configuration.
