I find Short-eared owls to be stunning. And one day I will get a tack-sharp photo of one in flight. Friday, however, was not that day. But you know? Just being there was so uplifting.

Amazing head-turning adaptations.
An owl’s eyes are fixed in their sockets so they have to turn their head to see around. They have extra vertebrae and adaptations to keep blood flowing to their brain when spinning that head around.

A Hairy Helmet Crab (Telmessus cheiragonus) who appears to be crabby and a bit judgmental. 🦀😜

Breazeale Interpretive Center and aquarium, Bay View WA. The poodle and I had a nice walk on their acreage and saw a black-tailed deer and great blue heron out in the fields. The hairy helmet crab lives up to its name and is a lovely yellow with flecks of orange. It has dark tipped claws and dark eyes on stalks.

Though its ear tufts might be small, this medium-sized owl has quite large yellow eyes which are surrounded by black feathers - this really makes its eyes stand out. It also has a relatively large head. The Short-eared Owl has a black, curved beak and its body feathers vary in coloration from creamy beige to brown, and are mottled. There is quite a lot of darker streaking on its upper breast. All of these colors help it blend into its surrounding, providing it with nice camouflage when it is on the hunt or roosting.
