The hummingbird sits within an easy reach of the hanging baskets and can also keep a watch on approaching adversaries for the hummingbird feeder. They guard their nectar sources fiercely.

Preening the pantaloons.
An eagle pair was up in the trees above the water (and ducks) of Ridgefield NWR yesterday afternoon.

A Bald Eagle, doing some preening on a branch high up in the trees at the refuge yesterday. This was the smaller male, the female was a few branches over. Bright yellow feet and beak, rather dirty white head and tail feathers (lots of mud this time of year,) and dark brown feathers on the remainder of the body.

My nearly daily walk takes me by this beautiful decaying stump that is a home to moss and lichen, and a shelter funneling rainwater to sword ferns. Not shown at the very top is a red huckleberry bush.

A Hooded Merganser drake was having a little preening session when he fanned his tail wide and looked to the right. His black and white ‘hood’ is fully raised, and his eye gleams gold. The canal has dappled sunlight and duckweed.
