Pecan pie is better as a bar cookie with a shortbread crust than as a pie with a flaky crust

For a low low budget Thanksgiving slasher The Last Thanksgiving (2020) is a pretty good time. A few fun gags, good practical gore and a Linnea Quigley role. Promises Thanksgiving Texas Chainsaw Massacre and it doesn't deliver a masterpiece but it does deliver. I was charmed 🍿🦃

Is your hole festive? Do you decorate?

Days of Heaven (1978). Every shot a gorgeous painting, storytelling that is archetypal but I felt connected to the characters anyway because the film is so tactile. Love the blending of immigrant traditions in the crowd scenes too 🍿

I look forward to a whole Johansson monologue while possessed by a demon and a lot of unnecessary backstory 😃

Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand underplay their performances and the production design, while beautifully shot in black and white, has a sterile feel. I do love Kathryn Hunter as the witches and love when stylistically it veers to surrealism but otherwise it's inert 🍿
Today's first movie is The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021) 🍿

Murder, My Sweet (1944) is a wonderful private eye noir with surreal stylistic flourishes. Dick Powell gives a lighter, more comedic turn at Philip Marlowe than Bogart, less hardened but still falling into inky blackness and fog. Maybe not the best Raymond Chandler mystery

Train Dreams is visually gorgeous (DP Adolpho Veloso) with an ever present string heavy score by Bryce Dressner. It's a tactile and emotionally driven period film about a logger finding meaning in life after tragedy through long passages of time amidst stunning pacific northwestern landscapes. Using

After the Hunt might be my least favorite new movie I've seen in years. First of all I don't know what goes on a Yale or wherever but every faculty member at state universities that I know does not have time for ANY of this shit. Bad script, self serious tone (performances, music, cinematography,
