I'm a Canadian artist living in Toronto. Initially I painted landscapes but the pandemic changed me and now I paint everything, except abstract, but it's still early.

I was planning on seeing Elisapie in Toronto in April 2020 but then pandemic hit and everything got cancelled. Since then she's put out a whole new album - Inuktitut - of covers of songs she grew up with, translated to Inuktitut. It's so beautiful. Tonight I'm seeing her at Danforth Music Hall.

I take my reference photos seriously. I snapped this on a trip to Algonquin Park in 2014 and painted it back then. Now I want to approach it differently. First step is to re-size it to 9:10, then identify the shapes of the colours. Choosing the right sketch colour will be important.

The extended part is roughly coloured in with green above a tree on the right and blue across the sky. In the photo, I've outlined sections of colours with a fine black Sharpie pen. There are pale green trees, yellow leaves, orange leaves, red leaves and dark green fir trees. Across the foreground are four white birch trees with some yellow leaves. Two of the white trunks are bare.

I went to the St. Lawrence Market without a shopping list, confident that something tasty and healthy would catch my eye. Fully half of my purchases were pastries. Cheesecake, date square, rum ball, tart, croissant and scone. I cannot be trusted to wing it.

My shopping haul on my kitchen counter. Clockwise from 12:00 - 2 mangos and 2 avocados on top of a carton of a dozen eggs, 2 bananas, cheese and onion scone, cheese croissant, cellophane carton of pastries with a custard tart uppermost, cellophane carton of cheesecake, 1kg jar of plain yogurt, small bag of cheese curds. At centre is a pile of small potatoes.

I didn't set out to paint a series. I just kept coming across scenes of skaters enjoying winter. I loved that when cold weather hits, so many Canadians' first thought is "I wonder if the rink/lake/pond/river has frozen over." Click Alt-text for details.

Afternoon Skate 36x40, Oil on wood panel The rink at Glenstewart Ravine is built and maintained by the neighbourhood in Toronto's Beach neighbourhood. Trees in the ravine surround the rink and roads run on eather side of it with parked cars. The painting is of a glowing grey day. The skaters are pairs and singles, some in bright winter clothing, some in greys and browns. Among the skaters are a couple with the woman reaching out her hand but the man has his hands in his pockets, a pair or teens standing not skating, a small girl in pink snowpants with arms outstretched for balance and a parent crouched down beside her watching, and a few bystanders on the snowy side, on with black dog on a leash. Parked cars line the street behind the rink. Rouge River Skate 36x40, Oil on wood panel In the first winter of the pandemic, the people of Toronto were desperate to get outside and socialize safely while still maintaining distance. In this stretch of the Rouge River, where it meets Lake Ontario, there are several groups of people. Some playing a game of shinny, some just standing and talking. One older man holding a lawnchair for balance and a small child clutching his mother for balance. The sun is starting to set throwing golden light on the trees and grasses on either side of the river. The sky around the sun is turning deep blue which reflects on the ice. Shinny 36x40, Oil on wood panel Late winter, my cousin's boys and their friends spent the afternoon clearing the pond and playing a game of shinny. Their beloved dog tagged along because any outing that involves the kids AND snow is a great outing. The day is grey but there's a faint glow of sunlight through the clouds. Distant trees and small shed are silhouetted against the snowy field. Tall grasses and a few stones stick through the snow. There are three boys on the ice and one on a bench in the lower right corner. They have a net and sticks. On the bench is a shovel, more sticks, bags and boots. The large black dog sits centre in the foreground. He calmly looks directly at the viewer. The original sketch was bright pink which shows through in some places, most notable in the grasses. Game On! 36x40, Oil on wood panel Painted from a photo in Toronto's Archives. In 1919 six boys/men gathered on a patch of ice at the bottom of a gully in a vacant space in the Gerrard & Hastings neighbourhood. Two story houses can be seen in the distance. A line of hydro poles and wires run across the painting along Gerrard St. In the field, bare-branched trees overhang the gully. The ground is snow covered. A few people stand on the hill look down at the lads. A few of them have sticks. Some are just standing. The sky is grey but the sun can be seen trying to shine through the hazy clouds. The texture of the snow is rough covering the ground. A bit of the original pink sketch shows through the tree branches and through the grey of the houses and the people.

New painting completed in the studio today. Based on a photo from the Toronto Archives, these lads found a patch of ice which was all they needed. They grabbed their sticks and it was game on!
