it does come with the downside that it's harder to future-proof a webtoon for print, but tbh expecting a print run is probably counting your chickens? in general i think approaching any solo project anticipating you'll make merch is a bad practice. if it happens, it happens, but don't plan on it

given that one of the big questions i tend to see out of people (myself included) is "how the hell do i learn good paneling?" i think the long vertical format gives a lot of wiggle room for both very basic panels AND doing extremely dynamic things

while Webtoon as a company and platform is exploitative and only worth looking into as a career move if you have *very carefully* read the fine print and you're prepared for the downsides, i think the little w webtoon format of pages being in a long strip for mobile scrolling is kinda slept on

In IR undergrad I had a VERY post-structuralist prof who argued that it was words and construction all the way down. I asked: but do you really think that’s useful to a kid living in war-torn Iraq? He can’t change his own reality. He said “Well, maybe he could” and that was just too Matrix-y to me.
