Haitians cannot endure more violence — especially children.

The international community should urgently support the recently UN-authorized Gang Suppression Force with the personnel and resources needed to protect Haitians from criminal groups.

🇭🇹UNICEF in Haiti: "The number of children displaced by violence in Haiti has almost doubled in the past year, with 680,000 now uprooted."

As @hrw.org said in June, the scale of the displacement crisis has overwhelmed existing capacities.

🇭🇹 The US attempt to prematurely end TPS for Haitians, citing improved security, couldn’t be further from reality.

Conditions in Haiti have only worsened.

The US should continue to protect Haitians from being returned to brutal violence.

My piece for @latimes.com

Contributor: If Haiti has become more violent, why end Haitians' temporary protected status in the U.S.?
The Trump administration has cited flawed and contradictory assessments of conditions in that country — which, make no mistake, remains unsafe.

🇨🇺Today marks 4 years since Cuba’s historic 11J protests.

Many released detainees told @hrw.org they endured beatings, solitary confinement & lack of medical care. Others face surveillance.

Many remain in prison.

The crisis that drove them to protest persists

🇭🇹A needed step for Haiti — but far from enough.

Governments — including the US & Canada — the EU and the UN should impose further targeted sanctions on those responsible for killings & other serious abuses, but also on Haitian and foreign actors who support them.

🇭🇹Haïti a besoin d'une aide internationale urgente alors que la violence s'intensifie. Des millions de personnes ont du mal à se procurer de la nourriture, un abri et des services essentiels.

"In Hinche, we stayed in a garage, sleeping on the floor on pieces of cardboard with a few sheets. Neighbors brought blankets, food, and water — their generosity helped us survive.

We spent nearly a month there, but the violence followed us. We managed to escape to Cap-Haïtien."

"We stayed about four months in Mirebalais — until the bandits arrived there too. We heard warnings over loudspeakers, telling people to flee. Everyone ran in different directions — on foot, by truck, by motorcycle. It was chaos...

A friend drove my family and me to Hinche."

"In late November 2024, the bandits arrived in Cabaret. My family and I spent 15 days hearing gunfire as they roamed freely through the streets. They destroyed our garden and killed our animals. We had no choice but to leave.

We fled to Mirebalais, hoping to find safety."
