I think that's my fucking beat at this point. George, what do you cover?

"Evil, motherfucker. I cover evil."
neonflag.bsky.social
Why the fuck do people like this end up in fucking charge all the time?

All copyeditors go to heaven.

Even the Chicago style ones.

My non-lawyer ass has spent a lot of time listening to court cases this week. And month. And couple of years.

They keep telling me not to go to law school.

Plenary power: a complete and absolute power to take action on a particular issue, with no limitations.

Get used to seeing this term in the media for a while, after Stephen Miller accidentally used it in public with reference to the military.

Where the Law is Silent: Plenary Power & the “National Security” Constitution - Harvard Political Review
The unspoken truth is that the Constitution can be ignored in the name of “protecting” it, and thus the nation, from minorities.

Donald Trump, who has ordered the U.S. Navy to sink unarmed boats from Venezuela which he *suspects* of carrying drugs - an order that clearly violates international law and is arguably a war crime - and is also sending soldiers into American cities against civilians ... wants a Nobel Peace Prize.

They're not even trying to be a citywide publication.

Sushi is only good when its inside the perimeter and an omokase table at $300 a seating, according to the AJC.

Almost all of Buford Highway's best restaurants are ITP, and there's still almost no representation.

The list was written by rich white people, for rich white people.
neonflag.bsky.social
The AJC's "Top 50 Restaurants" list is trash driven by social media and PR clientele that can be safely ignored by actual Atlantans.

It excludes almost all OTP restaurants, ignores restaurants that don't serve alcohol and shamefully has next to nothing on Buford Highway. The AJC is lying to you.

Do not, for a moment, forget that these clowns need you more than you need them. Democratic counties product roughly two-thirds of America's GDP. While I think progressives should pick their battles carefully, they can have the kind of economic effect on political adversaries that can change policy.

The Target boycott cratered its share value and drove its CEO out of office. The massive reaction to Jimmy Kimmel being removed from the air did the same thing to Disney's stock, and is likely to affect the relationship between Disney and its distributors moving forward.

Consumer action works.
neonflag.bsky.social
Even Georgia's anti-BDS legislation - which is almost certainly unconstitutional - only applies to large institutional purchasers with contracts worth more than $100,000 and five or more employees. No one has challenged the law in court because the state has never enforced it ... and really can't.

I heard a bonkers claim that refusing to do business with MAGA nutcases is an act of "domestic economic terrorism."

We live in stupid times, and I wouldn't put it past Patel or someone equally unmoored from legal reality to attempt a prosecution just to send a message. But do not comply in advance.

A gentle reminder that a public-facing company can't refuse to do business with you on the basis of race, sex, religion, national origin under the Civil Rights Act.

But no one can force YOU as a common consumer to do business with anyone. Old fashioned consumer boycotts are perfectly legal.

If there is a list being kept by this government of people they want to eventually put up against the wall, I am probably on it. I bear that burden gladly.

I tire of cowardice in the face of an existential threat to the rule of law and democracy.
neonflag.bsky.social
People want to fight for democracy, and they want that fight to cost nothing.

"A sternly-worded letter."

You will have soldiers in the streets, and will be thrown in prison by masked agents if you look funny or say the wrong thing, but heaven help us if your credit is damaged trying to stop it.

Of such things are solidarity movements born.

In principle, I agree with you here. As a practical matter, this is about negotiating with a rogue government, and leverage matters. An act of civil disobedience is called for, and this one looks tasty. The question is how to do it, and how to use it to get what progressives want.
neonflag.bsky.social
Again: federal impoundment is big-black-letter-law illegal. To start garnishment or the rest, the government would have to confront its own criminality in court.
neonflag.bsky.social
I agree. The effort would have to be broadly coordinated by Democratic-led states. But it is achievable. And as I've said before: the practical resources of the federal government are limited. They can't actually get everyone.
neonflag.bsky.social
Also, some people take great offense at being quoted directly and accurately.

I'm not in the business of making shit up. If you find that entertaining, watch Fox News. They are, after all, formally in the entertainment business.

Rule of thumb: nothing good is inside an email from a Proton account.

A reaction to the reaction piece.

"So take a seat, you dicksucking Libtard porchmenkey lump of shit. Your mom is a whore and she's burning in Hell as we speak. Go choke to death on a goat cock, you cue-ball mud-person faggot."

If the federal government is going to selectively withhold funds from Democratic states during the shutdown, Democratic states should withhold tax remittances to the federal government.

When you pay your taxes, it doesn't go through your state. The mechanismsto do so should be erected immediately.

Writers inspire us to be better. Right now, that is the very thing our government needs. This letter of more than 100 writers is a tremendous showing for freedom, reporting, and justice in the U.S.

Honored to have been involved. @penamerica.bsky.social @pressfreedom.bsky.social

More than 100 writers, journalists, and scholars call for the immediate release of Mario Guevara in a letter from @penamerica.bsky.social, @pressfreedom.bsky.social & Free Press.

His detention is a direct attack on press freedom. #FreeMario @attorneynora.bsky.social
