Great work from Steve as ever here. I think Powell has a potential Day’Ron arc. Summer League will mean a LOT for him this summer (TBF I said the same re Dariq Whitehead last year, and he didn’t play at all).

It would be helpful, but not necessary, for someone other than Keefe to explain why the #NJDevils can be allowed to continue on its present plummet. Actions would speak louder. Link: open.substack.com/pub/stevelic...
Actions, Not Words, Needed From Devils’ Brass
Unlike the large fire-breathing segment of the Devils’ fan base, I don’t have a problem with Tom Fitzgerald not saying anything to the public about this mess that is his own creation.

I agree the players are underperforming as well. It’s a complete meltdown.
That is definitely a problem - one exacerbated but kicked down the road when Luke got the $9M deal, and in all likeliness the roster will get worse before it gets better because of it. But it shouldn’t inhibit the top lines from being top performers.
January 1, 2026 at 5:41 PM
The Devils reportedly have 14 players with NTC/NMC in their contracts and can’t activate Kovacevic because of they’re up against the cap. Those are impediments to making improvements.
Is it a roster problem, though? The guys that should be performing, aren’t. That’s coaching/system/motivation, not roster. And I’m not talking about trying to acquire Quinn as much as him convincing others that NJ sucks and it’s better with other clubs, and our best players lose their motivation.
January 1, 2026 at 5:17 PM
It’s a roster problem, a coaching problem, and a player problem. The Devils may need a more vocal captain than Nico to keep these guys from losing focus, though I doubt that will happen. So the next move is likely to replace the coach, with Fitzgerald to be evaluated after the season. (1/2)
…Keefe is part of the problem, he’s not going to learn that from him. In particular, I’m trying to weigh Quinn Hughes’s ability to convince his brothers that “it’s great here” (in Minnesota) versus Jack or Luke’s ability to do the same. Quinn has seen multiple clubs, so his perspective matters more.
