📣 New from the AGE Research Group in the European Geriatric Medicine journal: our second national UK #sarcopenia survey shows some improvement in diagnosis, but plenty of work still to do to deliver evidence-based therapies for this under-treated condition.

Are we making progress in the diagnosis and management of sarcopenia? Results from a UK-wide survey - European Geriatric Medicine
Purpose To describe current practice in diagnosis and management of sarcopenia in older people in the United Kingdom (UK). Methods Healthcare professionals from UK organisations were invited to complete an online survey about sarcopenia diagnosis and management. Results One hundred and one responses were analysed. Respondents represented a range of professional groups across 62 organisations from secondary care, primary care, community providers and private practitioners. Sarcopenia was identified in only 32/62 (52%) organisations. Within these organisations, 17/32 (53%) did not use a recognised algorithm for diagnosis, although 31/32 (97%) of organisations assessed muscle strength. Twenty-nine (91%) organisations reported offering interventions to people diagnosed with sarcopenia, but resistance training was offered by only 19 (59%). Conclusion This survey has shown that just over 50% of respondent organisations in the UK are identifying sarcopenia in older people as part of clinical practice, highlighting the need for ongoing work to achieve further improvement.

Fantastic to see the September issue of the @gerisoc.bsky.social magazine shining a spotlight on #research! It looks at #clinicaltrials for older people, mentions several aspects of our group’s work, and includes pieces co-authored by our very own @oldertrialsprof.bsky.social and Dr Claire McDonald

📣 Calling clinicians and academics with knowledge and experience of #resistancetraining as an intervention 📣

The #NIHR MLTC Cross NIHR-Collaboration are exploring interventions for people with #MLTC and need your help.

The survey should take around 7-10 minutes to complete - lnkd.in/giUXUp43

Big thanks to @annabasu1.bsky.social for her inspirational talk to the AGE Research Group and @nihrnewcastlebrc.bsky.social on the SPACE Pilot project, a collaboration with @waystowellness.org.uk. Many parallels in the challenges faced by children with medical complexity and older adults with #MLTC
