Learn more about this piece and Ah Xian from Dr. Xiaohan Du, John H. Foster Assistant Curator of Pre-Modern Art at Asia Society Museum!
Ah Xian's China, China-Bust 57 is a gorgeous porcelain bust portrait that encapsulates the artist's desire to forge a new artistic language that straddles Chinese and Western traditions. Through the China, China series, the artist reflects on the Chinese cultural heritage that nurtured him and how the artistic practice informed by that heritage fits into the global contemporary art scene, following the artist's emigration to Australia in 1990. The bust portrait is a well-known Western sculptural format. Here, Ah Xian fuses that figurative tradition with porcelain fired in Jingdezhen, the historic porcelain production center of China. Through this process, the artist created an uncanny and deeply reflective work that speaks to a certain mode of cultural hybridity shared by both Chinese contemporary artists and the Chinese diaspora community at large. Part of the Asia Society Museum Collection, Ah Xian’s China, China-Bust 57 is currently on view as part of Metamorphosis: Chinese Imagination and Transformation at the China Institute Gallery, open through January 11, 2026.
