What does the shutdown mean for HUD and USDA tenants? Our deputy director Deb Thrope talked to @archpaper.com about the needless uncertainty it brings.

If you’re a tenant, make sure you know your rights (info available in ENG and ESP): nhlp.org/govshutdown.

No matter our race, place, or party, we all deserve a safe & stable place to call home. But Trump shutdown our government & wants to give control over our homes to corporations & big banks. How can we stop them? By sharing our stories.

Instead of helping keep people housed by sharing clear shutdown guidance & tenants' rights info, the Trump admin has turned HUD's website into a political billboard.

@nhlp.bsky.social has the real info on what the shutdown could mean for you:

“It’s disguised as work requirements & term limits, but in reality it’s a way to strip families of their benefits,” said NHLP deputy director Deborah Thrope. Trump’s ultimate goal here is to destroy the federal housing programs, seize even more control, & continue his unlawful power grab.

Trump will worsen the housing crisis by:
⚠️ taking away housing from poor & working people
⚠️ letting corporations rig the rules in their favor &
⚠️making it easier for landlords to discriminate against immigrants & people of color
nhlp.bsky.social
No matter where we come from or what language we speak, our country has the resources to ensure that all of us have a safe place to call home. But Trump blames immigrants of color, Black people (immigrant or otherwise), and people struggling to make ends meet for our hard times.

NEW: One proposed rule would strip aid from families where a member is in the U.S. illegally.

Families could keep their assistance IF the ineligible member moves out.

But HUD expects many families to give up assistance out of “fear of the family being separated.”

Homes are supposed to be our safe havens. “So many people who are afraid of ICE enforcement, at work or at schools, are staying at home as a refuge,” NHLP's Marie Claire Tran-Leung said.

HUD's collab with DHS is an attempt to weaponize HUD and the public housing authorities as tools for violence.

No matter where we come from or how long we’ve lived here, our country has the $$$ to ensure that all of us have a safe place to call home. But Trump’s HUD wants to tear families apart & worsen the housing crisis. NHLP's Marie Claire Tran-Leung talked to @motherjones.com about their cruel plan.
Graphic with Mother Jones logo at the top. Below reads the article title and subhead “When Home Isn’t Safe: Immigration Enforcement Meets Housing Discrimination. What we’re seeing is people are terrified, and it’s deliberate.” by Katehrine Dailey. There is more text that reads: As the law now stands, any assistance received by these families is prorated based on how many family members are eligible. But the Department of Housing and Urban Development under President Trump is seeking to end this policy, re-upping a rule that he had proposed in 2019 during his first administration. The policy is currently under review by the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, but if enacted, it would require that all members of a household must be eligible for housing assistance, or the entire household would be disqualified. It also reads: “What differentiates then from now is the very aggressive and lawless nature of their deportation and general anti-immigrant agenda,” said Marie Claire Tran-Leung, evictions initiative project director at the National Housing Law Project. She added that all families are being forced to calculate their risks—whether they live in subsidized housing or not.

In the continued assault on poor & working people & the federal housing programs, Trump’s HUD might soon propose taking away housing from millions of ppl who exceed strict time limits or can't meet harsh requirements. Our deputy director Debroah Thope talked to @truthout.org about the consequences.
Graphic with Truthout logo at the top, the title of the article “Trump Administration Threatens Housing for Millions in “War on the Poor” by Eleanor Bader in the middle, and orange highlighted text that reads “Despite these unknowns, Thrope said housing justice proponents are mobilizing. “People are banding together in coalitions,” she said. “Tenants in HUD housing are joining with disability rights advocates, seniors, and families with young children who won’t be able to comply with work rules because of ongoing child care issues.” In the short term, she says that both tenants and advocates are keeping a watchful eye on the administration to see what actions they’re taking.”

Our government affairs director, @noelleporter.bsky.social, talked public housing with @monicapotts.bsky.social for @newrepublic.com and how we need to shift our housing system to one that puts people over profit.
Alt text: Graphic with The New Republic logo at the top, the title of the article “Public Housing Again, Really? Yes, Really.” by Monica Potts in the middle, and an orange highlighted text that reads “Noëlle Porter, director of government affairs at the National Housing Law Project, put it even more bluntly. “It’s hard for me to accept any sort of premise that says, if we just make developers happy, we’ll solve our problems,” she said. “Making profiteers happier does not satisfy the profiteers; profiteers will want more if they get more. And so, this idea that affordability, or the affordable housing crisis, can be solved by happy profiteers, is insane, because you really can’t make a profit off of deeply affordable housing.”
