Some exciting news ⤵️ to share: I have been awarded a UKRI Metascience AI Fellowship! This will enable me to spend the next few years working with research councils & policymakers to develop disciplinary guidelines & policy on responsible AI use in Social Science research. @mcrlinguistics.bsky.social

Overall, we argue that developing corpus literacies can act as a means of developing critical AI literacies, and that this in itself can enhance language learning for learners who choose to use AI.
niallrcurry.bsky.social
We raise questions on the role of the product and the process in language learning, the differences between perceived personalised learning and its relationship with individualised learning, and the value of critical questions surrounding technology use for language learning.
niallrcurry.bsky.social
We also found that the generative AI tools, while popular, present challenges related to over-reliance and a lack of truly personalised learning.
niallrcurry.bsky.social
Conversely, we found that while ChatGPT was widely used by the learners, ultimately it elicited mixed evaluations regarding reliability. The overall findings suggest a few things, including that corpus literacy fosters critical engagement with language data.
niallrcurry.bsky.social
Broadly, we wanted to study how undergraduate learners from a southern European university engage with corpus and AI tools and we found that while learners initially lacked familiarity with corpus tools, they came to recognise their value in developing corpus-mediated linguistic awareness.

This study was conducted to examine the potential for the integration of corpus and AI literacies in language education and we used a sequential mixed-methods design, incorporating training days, workshops, task outputs, and focus groups as data.

Follow the word gap: the social life of a deficit concept

i trace how deficit ideologies associated with the 'word gap' get reproduced - and rejected - in teacher education and schools.

A systematic approach to identifying communication-related challenges that should be addressed by policymakers of the host country to reduce the vulnerability of refugees

New article out now on how to reduce communication-related vulnerability of war refugees

onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...
Communication-Related Vulnerability of War Refugees: The Case of Ukrainians Escaping Russia's Invasion. When war refugees arrive in a host country, they may find themselves in a vulnerable condition and struggle to cope in a foreign setting. This article presents a systematic approach to identifying important communication-related challenges that should be addressed by policymakers at the national level of the host country to reduce the vulnerability of refugees. Building upon the theoretical framework of “communication-related vulnerability to disasters,” a case study of Ukrainian refugees fleeing to Estonia to escape Russia's invasion in 2022 is used to map out the ways in which displaced individuals may become more vulnerable due to various individual, social-structural, and situational factors that impede access to, understanding of, or responding to risk and crisis information. The data from 15 semi-structured interviews with key crisis managers show how access to vital information may be disrupted by a digitized communication environment unfamiliar to the refugees and the authorities' lack of experience in dealing with mass immigration. It also reveals how barriers to understanding arise from limited language skills and exposure to disinformation, and how crisis managers cannot provide adequate support if they experience information overload and poor interagency cooperation.
